Me, the Anti-Cool

It's official. I'm pretty sure I'm the least cool of Dawn Eden's blogging amigos, and by a large margin.

She's posted her ballot for the Village Voice's 2003 Music Critics' Poll. There are two polls, one for Pop and Jazz albums and one for Pop and Jazz singles. Out of the twenty songs she listed, I am familiar with...let's see, um...carry the one...yep, that would be zero, zip, nada, uh-uh, none. In fact, I recognized only ONE of the artists' names, that being Lou Christie, and I thought he was dead. I guess I was wrong about that, too, fortunately for Lou.

Sigh.

(I'll bet she doesn't have an "Elbow Bones and the Racketeers" LP, though. Not that that mitigates my extreme uncoolity.)

First, thank you for the plug; second, you are surely not the "least cool" amigo of my blog or any blog.

I stuck my poll ballot up because it was a slow blogging day, and because I was too lazy to write to the indie-label artists for whom I'd voted, to notify them. (I thought they might happen upon that post while Googling themselves.)

Also, I thought that some people who read my blog and know music would be interested or amused by my choices, and I was right: Charles Hill said in his Weblog that he was happy to learn that the Judee Sill albums are now available domestically on CD (http://www.dustbury.com/archives/002108.html).

There is one person on my list whom I was certain you'd know, and I'm surprised his name didn't ring a bell: Noel Harrison. Remember "The Girl from Uncle"? He's Rex Harrison's son, who starred alongside Stefanie Powers on that series. Rhino Handmade just put out a best-of CD of his work which is often evocative and romantic. Remember "The Windmills of Your Mind," from "The Thomas Crown Affair"? That was his recording.

Dawn, you're very sweet, but it's OK, really. I've come to terms with my terminal uncoolness, especially as it relates to music. I love music, all kinds, and I wish I had more time to devote to keeping up with it, but I don't and that's life. And that's [one of many reasons] why we need you around to save us the trouble of finding out for ourselves what's cool. You just need to tell us. Which, of course, you've done in your post.

Noel Harrison did "Windmills"? Hmm. I didn't know that. I can play that on my guitar by the way. Just the melody; I only play melodies on my guitar. Chords are for someday when I retire.

I really was surprised at seeing Lou Christie's name on the list. Is he still doing the falsetto thing? (I started to type castrato, but I guess that's not really right, is it?)
