"Denominational Politics": A Sad Phrase...
Bryan is getting sick and tired of the political games in the Southern Baptist Convention, to the point where he's pondering alternatives.
The things he's exercised about have been going on for years and years, much to our disgrace as a denomination. I don't know what the answer is (well, that's not true...I do know, but it involves acting Christ-like and putting others before self and focusing on getting a lost world saved, but I guess I'm just naive because there's obviously a more important agenda at work), but I hope it doesn't involve losing folks like Bryan, because that will only ensure the acceleration of the freefall toward irrelevancy.
Politics contaminating the worship of God is an old, old story.
Comparatively speaking, Southern Baptists could do a lot worse: like tossing core New Testament Scripture into the trash when it becomes inconvenient.
Imagine the joy devout New England Episcopalians feel knowing a man like Gene Robinson is their bishop.
Losing one's denomination? That's putting it mildly...

while I agree that the situation in the episcopal church of america is disturbing, I think it's a different form of controversy.
while the sbc controversy was ostensibly about scripture (biblical innerancy), the methods used were purely political, and have had the effect of instituting a sort of "thought control" that I find unsettling.
Whether from the far left or from the far right, it makes for a very sad situation.

The goal of any organized group, be it religious, political, etc, is to...maintain the group.
I'm reading a book called "More money, more ministry", and it is a real eye-opener on how church organizations/denominations began to take on ideals of corporations that surfaced after the Civil War. As they were run this way, it became more about the survival of the organization than the reason it had been created in the first place. I see this a lot in denominations and organizations, and it quite frankly makes me ill.
I think I'll be posting on this topic eventually.
