Why I May Be Irish

St. Patrick's Day holds a special place in my heart, but not for any of the usual reasons. This is just a bit of family trivia. My brother was born on March 17, so that's one thing. And I was born in the booming metropolis of Shamrock, Texas, and that's another thing.

As a result, this German-American Protestant non-green-beer-drinking Texan stakes a claim to St. Paddy's Day, and I'll wield a shillelagh on any who'd dispute it.

P.S. I almost forgot..."The Quiet Man" is one of my favorite movies. That pretty much seals it, I think.

My Great Grand Uncle, Sir James Craig, was the first Prime Minister of Northern Ireland. An Irish Protestant, but none the less, I have my requisite green on today.

I am proud of every Irish gene in my DNA. YET...I cannot get excited about St. Patrick's Day. I'm glad for the other bloodlines in my family tree that diluted out the love of beer in all its forms and Irish Whiskey. Two of my children have red hair and freckles and I do love potatoes so.

The grassy, rolling countryside of Kentucky reminds me very much of Ireland. That may be why my folks chose to settle here.

Like yourself, I've seen The Quiet Man more times than I can count on fingers and toes and I still look forward to that classic film being run the next time. What a cast of characters are in that great piece of artistic endeavor. In my opinion it's perfect in all respects. One of my favorite parts is when John Wayne is driving and dragging Maureen O'Hara either before himself or behind himself and one Irish Mother offers him a stick to beat the lovely wife with. There will never be another film like it.
