Minor Makeover
I guess it's the "spring cleaning" urge that makes me want to change the look of the Gazette, mitigated by my comfortable-in-a-rut mindset that keeps me from doing anything drastic. In any event, I've added a splash of color to the blog, although I'm not sure I'll keep it this way. I have something else in mind, and this was just a warmup to remind me of how the Movable Type templates work.
I've also added a little link at the bottom of each post on the main page to let you jump back to the top of the page. This is a very minor touch, but should make it easier to return to the random photos of Abbye, which I understand is the real reason 99% of my visitors come here. But I'm not bitter...just resigned.
As always, comments and suggestions are welcomed.
Abbye?? Who's Abbye??? I come here to read the sports column.
Posted by: shannon at April 17, 2004 10:04 PMMr. Freen, now that you mention it, I guess I've unconsciously adopted a Middle-Eastern motif...must be the desert influence.
And, Shannon, if you're looking for sports, then you've come to the right place. Lately, Abbye has become the canine equivalent of that illustrious Texas ex-boxer turned actor, Randall "Tex" Cobb. She's gettin' whupped everytime she turns around.
Posted by: Eric at April 17, 2004 10:52 PMI love the new color scheme. And the design in the right column is very nice.
Posted by: jen at April 18, 2004 06:32 PMEeeee!
That's what I call a MAJOR make-over! You changed the color scheme to red! It's, ah, just a bit strong on the eyes. The yellow looked better!
If you want a truly amazing set of "desert" color patterns, lemme know and I'll send you an attachment with some "swatches".
Posted by: Mr. Freen at April 19, 2004 11:17 AMOK...I'm still experimenting, so nothing's set in stone (or in blood, as the color may be).
Thanks for the offer of swatches, but that's my problem...I have TOO MANY to choose from, and I having trouble figuring out the look I want.
Does this color scheme really look red on your monitor? It's supposed to be maroon (R-128, G-0, B-0), and, in fact, looks that way on my LCD screen (which isn't particulary optimal for color accuracy).
Posted by: Eric at April 19, 2004 12:21 PMI should have been more precise. Yes, you're right. Technically, it's maroon, not red. You've raised a very interesting point, Eric. Different people not only have different monitors, they also have different brightness/ contrast and hue settings!
What you may see as "maroon" may or may not be the same as what others see. A lot of people have this problem with "avatar" pictures on discussion boards. Maybe the picture looked fine on their monitor but it's either too dark or too washed out on someone else's.
So, depending on how high either of us have the brightness and contrast cranked on our respective monitors, we'll still see different colors, even though we both understand the RGB value of the particular shade.
Still, I see it as a reddish-maroon color. If you want an outside reference, it looks like thick, venous blood, just as it starts to coagulate. Okay, that is a morbid reference. But that's the color!
If you want a different outside reference, Marilyn Manson used that shade on his album "Antichrist Superstar". He also painted the walls in his home the same color.
I know, that wonderful piece of rock-trivia must truly make your day.
Surprised the heck out of me when I saw The Gazette sporting it, that's for sure.

I don't even want to know how you know that! ;-)
Posted by: Eric at April 19, 2004 10:23 PMThat's easy!
Some truly obsessive groupie mentioned it on her fan site.
Isn't the internet wonderful? When it was originally conceived, it was designed for scientists transmitting research data. As it expanded, others foresaw the day when people from around the world would be able to communicate directly with each other, ushering a new era of global peace and understanding.
But all those visionaries failed to recognize the internet's single most important use: helping AriadneGothKitten let the whole world what color paint Marilyn Manson uses for interior decorating.

Don't laugh, I actually do look forward to updated pictures of Abbye! She's sooooo cute! I always notice within one or two passes when you've added a new pic!
The new Gazette color scheme is very attractive. I don't know if it was intentional or not, but the combination of light yellow and the pattern in the right-hand column has a decidedly Middle-Eastern quality to it.
There's a discussion board dedicated to Frank Herbert's Dune series that uses an almost identical pattern/ color scheme.
