Reverie

Most computer technology is lost on me. But it's use gives me moments of great pleasure. Like tonight. I am able sit in my backyard, relishing the cool breeze and smiling at the soft sound of distant crickets chirping, punctuated by an occasional dog's barking or metal windchime's clanging. At the same time I can be in touch with the other side of the world, read Eric's blog and others, discuss them and their comments with my husband in the neighboring lawn chair, and research anything I can imagine. In the night sky a spotlight from the carnival at the mall is making an everchanging lightshow as it reflects on the advancing bank of clouds.

Whoops. A bug just dive bombed me and my computer screen. End of enjoyment. I'm going back inside.

So much for the intrepid techno-adventurer!

Wait...you're using a Mac! They're bug-proof, aren't they? ;-)

Hi Jasmine,

The last post I made to Fire Ant was done on my laptop machine from a picnic table at Thousand Hills State Park in Missouri, after dark, by the red light of my headlamp. I was only about 100 feet from being out of cell phone range outside of Kirksville; when I visit there, I keep going to the same campsite because the cell signal is just strong enough from there to make it happen. Two campsites farther out and the signal is gone.

The cell phone modem is tediously slow, but gets the job done. I watched the campfire while the pages loaded. Insects did not bug me, but this does: What is the etymology of "entomology?"

After tenting Saturday night in 50 degree air, just cool enough to keep my nose comfortably cold, the repeated cackle of a Tom turkey on his slow stroll through the woods, across the road from my campsite, let me know morning had broken.

I was in Kirksville to see my eldest son graduate from college. In seven years the younger son will perhaps find himself in similar circumstances. Reverie, indeed.

So far this year, I've taken three-dimensional (stereo-optic) pictures of 33 of Missouri's 82 State Parks and State Historic Sites, and posted them on the internet. Link there through my name.

Enjoy.
