Blogathon 2004 - Not
I just discovered that the Blogathon fund-raiser will not be held this year (I'm just four months late in getting up to speed), but will return in 2005. The event sponsors promise something bigger and better than ever, so if you're a blogger, start thinking about two things: (1) which worthy cause you'll blog on behalf of, and (2) what you'll blog about for 24 consecutive hours.
I hope the Gazette is still enough fun that I'll be up (literally) for this event next summer.
In the meantime, Project Blog is stepping into the gap this summer. As of today, 120 bloggers have signed up for this 24-hour event, which will take place on July 24. Pop over to the blogger list and if you see one you recognize and like, consider making a pledge. My interpretation of this project is that this is a one-time effort, and not intended to be a long-term Blogathon competitor.
Well, see, that's the challenge, isn't it? Any dang fool can sit at a keyboard and bang out *something* every 15 or 30 minutes. It takes some skill and creativity to put up compelling content. But, I may try it anyway.
Julie Neidlinger did the most remarkable Blogathon last summer. She created an original colored pencil drawing every hour for 24 hours and scanned and uploaded it to her blog. Then, she sent her pledgers one of the original drawings after the event. Besides being very talented, she's also very generous.
It's not against the rules to have pre-prepared articles, but it's a violation of the spirit (if not the letter) to script them so that they are automatically uploaded. However, I think spontanaeity is a strength in this kind of undertaking.
One idea is doing a "Mystery Science Theater 2000" kind of thing, providing a running commentary on 24 hours of TV programming, maybe on something cheesy like the Sci-Fi Channel. I don't think my life is exciting enough to devote 24 hours to describing it.
Posted by: Eric at July 11, 2004 08:52 AMYou sell yourself short! You're a heck of a lot more interesting than what's on TV!
Regular TV programming can be summed up with one word which is particularly inappropriate on a Sunday.
Here's an idea. Why not an hourly photo update on Abbye with reminiscenses?
Some of her encounters with The Packing Peanuts Of Doom or the adventure of the Chewable Toad are classics!

What subjects would you choose to about for 24 hours straight, Eric?
Is it considered cheating to have a whole bunch of articles prepared?
