Best Spokes...um...things
With a nod to Bryan over at Spare Change, and his recurring meme called the Top 5ive, I've come up with my top five non-living* commercial pitchthings. Feel free to add your own, without feeling limited by Bryan's incomprehensible rules for doing so.
- The Geico gecko
- The Serta sleep sheep
- The California Raisins
- The NHTSA's Crash Test Dummies (Vince & Larry)
- The Travelocity Gnome
Honorable mention goes to Catherine Zeta-Jones, whose low-energy pitches for T-Mobile more than qualify her. She's just not quite entertaining enough to crack the top 5.
*I apologize to those of you who are just now finding out that these spokescreatures are not, in fact, alive. To be honest, it was a shock to me, as well.
I love that Travelocity gnome. Good list.
Posted by: jen at July 17, 2004 06:17 PMThe commercial with Cathy Z/J that I like is when the guy gets wheeled into the ER because he just got his cell phone (he's in shock). When the male nurse faints, I crack up every time. The other commercial that always made me laugh was the guy in the ER with money "out the wazzoo"...I realize this has nothing to do with the subject, but your mention of CZJ made me think of it.
Posted by: julie at July 20, 2004 01:06 PMJulie, I agree that the fainting nurse is a great touch in that commercial. In fact, the whole commercial is well-conceived.

There's a great film titled "Amelie" from 2001 which got an Academy Award nomination for best foreign language film. It's really a good movie - well worth the time and effort it takes to rent, watch and read the subtitles. It was so good I watched it twice which is very rare.
Anyway, that movie has to be where Travelocity's ad agency got the idea of the travelling gnome.
