Local Therapy Dogs

Even though building the initial website was a sobering task, the latest addition to the Midland Rape Crisis & Children's Advocacy Center site was quite enjoyable to create.

The Center procured photos of each of the licensed therapy dogs it uses in its "Pawz For Kids" program designed to help the victims (primarily children and their families) of sexual abuse, and we've built a photo gallery to give them a little well-earned recognition.

One look at these lovable canine mugs is guaranteed to make your day a better one, regardless of how it started out.

By the way, Molly is one of my favorites. She's an Australian Shepherd who is frequently chasing a frisbee at the neighborhood park when Abbye and I are out for an evening stroll. Molly is very serious about her frisbee wrangling.

Update: Sadly, Molly passed away in 2006, causing much sadness throughout our neighborhood. After a period of mourning, her owner is carrying on her legacy in the form of Gracie, an adorable black lab/Aussie Shep mix.

[In case you're wondering why Abbye isn't a therapy dog, I'm pretty sure that a dog has to be out of therapy before qualifying. She's got years to go!]

Someone once handed me a flier inviting dog owners to attend a meeting to discuss participating in that. I went to the meeting, got some literature, and seriously considered it.

The Center would pay for some doggie obedience lessons, and at the end there would be a test administered by Sgt. Nicks (now retired) of the MPD K-9 squad.

They were basically looking for very calm, friendly and soothing dogs. My dog was (and still is) just too excitable . But the clincher was that the dog would have to be given a bath just prior to going on duty. Groan. All of a sudden it was looking like real work.

So, hats off to those people who took their pets through the thing, passed the test, and are letting their pets help others besides their owners.
