Red Counties vs Blue

Someone just sent me the map shown below via email, so I don't know its original source or its accuracy, but it presents an interesting picture...one that gets a bit distorted by the coloring of states.

US Map showing presidential election results by county

Granted, since we're a republic of states, those state lines really are meaningful; I'm not trying to minimize that fact or argue otherwise. This is just a different perspective than what we usually see.

I am curious about that one blue county in central Texas, though. Sorta looks like Travis County, doesn't it? Figures.

Update: Wallace over at Streams has a region-by-region analysis of why specific areas are colored like they are. And Dan at Behind the Wall of Sleep uses the map as a jumping off point to explain to a certain bombastic pundit why these results are, indeed, a mandate.

It's Travis County. Kerry won 56% of the vote. Living here, I know what it must be like to be a Republican in NYC... but at least I'm still in Texas.

...or being a Republican in New England. I'm... I'm...
I'm living in a "Blue" state now.

*hides face in shame*

Jack, our prayers and good thoughts go out to you and the other faithful 44% living and working behind "enemy" lines! ;-) [That's a joke, for any overly-sensitive Dems who might be visiting here; I do not consider you to be an enemy. Unless, of course, you're Michael M00re, in which case you've strayed badly off course, in more ways than one.]

It's OK, Mr. Freen...take a hint from the immortal poet-philosopher Billy Joel, and continue living in "A Red State of Mind." That's what really counts. (Plus, we have an open border policy if the Blue Plague finally becomes unbearable.)

That map has to be the saddest sight in the world for the Democratic Senate Reelection Committee chairman. No matter how blue places like NY and CA get, they have only two Senate seats. Much like, say, Idaho. :-)

One of the biggest things Rs need to do is translate their Presidential vote margins to the downballot races. They did it in the South and in Texas. Now it's time for the West. It's ridiculous that there are still so many Dem congressmen and Senators in places like North Dakota or Nevada. . .
