Five little words I love to hear...
"Doesn't work with Internet Explorer"
Oh, Clarence, Clarence, Clarence...where to start?
You can continue to use IE if you wish, but here are a few things you're missing: popup blocking, tabbed browsing, transparent PNG support (in most cases), proper handling of Cascading Style Sheets, auto-resizing of images to fit your browser window, quick resizing of text on hard-to-read sites, and much more security against certain kinds of attacks by those who would do you and your computer harm. Oh, and let's throw in the fact that IE is the slowest kid on the block in terms of displaying web pages.
What some of these issues mean is that you're spending more time than necessary waiting for pages to load, and once they load, you're not viewing them as they were designed.
And then there's the pesky issue of Microsoft no longer supporting or upgrading IE.
And, yes, I do use a Mac...and IE for Mac is actually BETTER in many of the areas I just mentioned than the Windows version. Nevertheless, IE is simply so far behind the technological curve that it's a shame that most people won't even consider the FREE alternatives.
But, hey, it's a free country and you are free to use the browser of your choice! ;-)
Posted by: Eric at November 19, 2004 07:16 AMI suppose I should add that I do use IE for Windows. As a web designer, I have to make sure that the sites I build work in all the most frequently used browsers. A site designed using generally accepted standards won't necessarily work or look right in IE, because of its shortcomings.
I should also clarify why I take a bit of glee in seeing an application that doesn't work in IE. This is due to the amazing number of websites which were designed by ignorant or uncaring people to work ONLY in IE. Thankfully, there are fewer and fewer of them (websites, that is; ignorance and disdain for others continues to be rampant...but that's another subject for another post).
Posted by: Eric at November 19, 2004 09:11 AMFirefox rules. I'll never go back.
I'm bummed that I'm limited to IE at work.
Posted by: jen at November 19, 2004 10:06 AMEric is focusing on all the positive reasons to switch from Internet Explorer. This doesn't surprise me, since he's a naturally positive guy. He's chosen to use the carrot instead of the stick.
Here's the stick. It's old news, actually.
Name the well-known browser the US Government's CERT team has warned people not to use because of its security flaws.
That's one heck of an endorsement. "Don't Use Microsoft IE."

Did you say FREE? If so, where can we get the cd or free cd that will turn our Computers that run IE 6.0 into MAC clones?
When booting, the computer is going to ask: "WHICH OPERATING SYSTEM DO YOU WANT TO USE?"
In order for me and others to answer the above question, " That FREE MAC you were mentioning, IS THAT WHAT'S KNOWN AS AN "OPERATING SYSTEM"??? "
Posted by: The Eurasian at November 20, 2004 03:09 PMEurasian, go re-read what I wrote: Nevertheless, IE is simply so far behind the technological curve that it's a shame that most people won't even consider the FREE alternatives.
The alternatives to IE are free. Has nothing to do with computer platform (other than Safari, which is a Mac-only browser). Firefox, Netscape, Mozilla...all run on both Macs & Windoze machines and all are free.
You should be so lucky as to get a free Mac! ;-)
Posted by: Eric at November 20, 2004 03:14 PMI had no problems with viewin' that site with IE, and 'specially admired the ad banner for MS Office for Macs ;)
Posted by: Tig at November 21, 2004 08:29 PMOf course, it wasn't the site that doesn't work with IE, but the app that's the subject of the story. But that's neither here nor there.
For the record, I think Office for Mac is one of the crowning achievements of MS! ;-)

Eric
Until this time when I saw those words on your Blog, I had never seen them before. Were you having problems with IE? I can't imagine why. I don't suppose you use a MAC? Do you really believe that we all need saving from IE?
I'd rather fight than switch...but I'm willing to listen if you'd like to try and change my mind.
