BCS: If the answer is right, does the approach matter?

At the risk of incurring the Wrath of Bryan*, let me just observe that perhaps the oft-maligned BCS system isn't as bad as many have claimed, using the alleged mistreatment of California as Exhibit B (Ex. A being Auburn). The way Texas Tech is spanking Cal in the Holiday Bowl tends to make me think that the biggest flaw in the BCS rating system was in putting the Golden Bears too high in the standings.

Of course, it's not quite halftime and Cal could rally, but I couldn't resist the observation.

*Note that I have no dog in this fight whatsoever. I couldn't care less about the BCS, a playoff system, or most of the bowl games. But it sure is fun to watch some of the debate about those things...said debate being much more entertaining than 90% of the post-season matches.

Actually, I agree that Cal was probably rated too high, which is one of the things that kept Southern Cal as number 2 over Auburn in the rankings. The fact that Cal is not in a BCS bowl may seem like a triumph of the system, but it actually showed how the system is still screwed up. If Cal hadn't been ranked so highly throughout the season, Auburn would be number 2.

You really get off on this stuff, don't you? ;-)

Well, there are a lot of worse things to discuss, so go forth with my blessing. And speaking of blessing, I hope you and your family have a wonderful 2005!

BCS, SCHMEE-C-S! ... Still lamenting over my University of New Mexico Lobos getting whupped in the Emerald Bowl Thursday. :-(

Of course, it was Navy that did the whupping, which offers some consolation to someone with a Marine Corps background such as my family's.

A bowl victory continues to elude the Lobos ... not quite as long as Boston's World Series drought ... but darn near.

Yeah, I was hoping the Lobos would make a better showing. UTEP disappointed me also. But maybe the bowl appearances are a foreshadowing of better things!

Me, I just got a kick out of the old-fashioned West Texas butt-whipping the Red Raiders slapped on the boo-hoo Bears in their own back yard.

What's a BCS?

What's a BCS?

Well, after seeing how they played, one guess might be "Boy, Cal S***ks." (I have to watch my language because of you-know-who.)

Ordinarily, I'd never be that harsh, but they set themselves up for it with their alternating pre-game trash-talking and whining. Just another reminder that you really ought to save your talk for the game and post-game.

Of course, we all hope Texas shows better against those big 10 pretenders from Michigan.

And yes, it's always good to watch your language. I once got three days in-school suspension for saying that a competing football team "sucks" out a school bus window - back in my wild young days. ;-)

And a merry new year to you and yours Eric. One of these days I'll have to get out that way and visit my grandma. I'll look you up.

I'm holding you to that, Bryan! Have a great 2005.
