Book Meme
Via Patti over at the elegant White Pebble: Here's how it works. Copy the list, then remove from it the names of any authors not in your home library, replacing them with names of authors you have. Boldface the ones you’ve added.
1. Connie Willis
2. Neal Stephenson
3. Kinky Friedman
4. Anne Lamott
5. David Brin
6. Edgar Rice Burroughs
7. John Irving
8. Walt Kelly
9. Jeffrey Zeldman
10. William Shakespeare
Patti's list had a bunch of high-brow writers on it, hence my mostly-bolded list.
I got a Kinky Friedman book for Christmas, so I've got that going for me.
Run with it, amigos...
Eric, I had to match your six 'boldfaces' with six of my own ... maybe we're starting a trend.
1. Arturo Perez-Reverte
2. Stephen Greenblatt
3. Kinky Friedman
4. Hillary Clinton
5. Alexandre Dumas
6. Edgar Rice Burroughs
7. John Irving
8. Rudolfo Anaya
9. Agatha Christie
10. William Shakespeare
Rachel, at first I was intimidated by Patti's list because she had some real literary heavyweights on it, but then I realized that we create our own reading legitimacy. The authors we keep should reflect our unique interests, values and personalities.
Plus, just because I have Shakespeare in my library doesn't mean I read him! ;-)
Jeff, I limited my list to my books; my wife has every Agatha Christie book every published (AFAIK, and based on the several shelves filled with nothing but them).
I think the fun of this meme is simply to see the diversity of reading interests for people who, for whatever reason, pick the same blog(s) to read.
Posted by: Eric at January 6, 2005 06:50 AMWell, does it count that I just ordered Anne Lamott from Amazon and have read her before? We don't have much overlap, do we?
1. Louis Berkhof
2. Graham Greene
3. Henry James
4. Anne Lamott
5. Sir Walter Scott
6. Louis Berkhof
7. John Irving
8. Susan Hunt
9. Asne Seirerstad
10. William Shakespeare
Errr. . .
#6 is Peggy Noonan
Posted by: TulipGirl at January 6, 2005 08:19 AMNope, too late...you're stuck with Louis Berkhof. We know that's your preferred bedtime reading anyway! ;-)
Posted by: Eric at January 6, 2005 08:25 AMWell, it's true. . . *blush*
Posted by: TulipGirl at January 6, 2005 10:32 AMOnly two!
I'm not reading enough. I had to resort to Google far too many times. (I linked some of mine to save you the same trouble...)
1. Bruce Schneier
2. Larry Wall
3. Thomas Friedman
4. Thich Nhat Hanh
5. David Allen Sibley
6. Dr. Seuss
7. Seth Godin
8. Michael Creighton
9. Jeffrey Zeldman
10. William Shakespeare
I suppose #6 might not count as "mine" - those are on my sons' shelves. But he's really one of my favorite and most-frequently-read authors these days.
#7 - I stumbled across his blog a few weeks ago, and didn't know who he was. The week after Christmas, I found one of his books on the ground next to the community's paper recycling bin. That's not meant as a commentary on the quality of the book - I like it so far.
Dr. Seuss definitely counts! I've also checked out Seth Godin's blog and posted about it. Thanks for the link.
Posted by: Eric at January 6, 2005 12:38 PMI admit I haven't looked at the whole list (just yours), so I should do that lol.
Posted by: Rachel at January 6, 2005 02:40 PMswap whole list for 'other site' (and now I have).
Posted by: Rachel at January 6, 2005 02:44 PM1. Isaac Asimov
2. Neal Stephenson
3. Orson Scott Card
4. Stephen R. Lawhead
5. David Brin
6. C. J. Cherryh
7. John Irving
8. Max Lucado
9. Elisabeth Elliot
10. William Shakespeare
Well, it's cool that everyone has Shakespeare. I have a bunch of Connie Willis stories in various SF mags, but I suppose that doesn't count. And I probably shouldn't call myself myself a real Texan not having any Kinky Friedman books, but I will anyway!
Posted by: denise at January 6, 2005 11:10 PMDenise, I could have used Asimov, Card and Lucado on my list as well.
As an obvious sci-fi fan, I'm surprised that you don't have any Connie Willis novels. She's a great writer of "speculative fiction."
And until I got Kinky for Christmas ;-) I didn't have any of his books.
Posted by: Eric at January 7, 2005 06:36 AMOooh, this is kinda fun. I posted my list on my blog: http://joyellasnippets.blogspot.com/ come visit if you like. Don't worry, you got your "props". :)

umm, I have none of those and have not heard of most of them bar Will Shakespeare (and I have heard of John Irving). Come to think of it I own a book of poems with some of Will's work in it.
