Random Observations...Because That's What We Do™
I'm having a really difficult time re-entering the blogging world after a week's absence. No, you don't have to thank me; it's the least I can do for you. But all good things must come to an end, and what better way than to provide some really banal observations. To wit...
- As Abbye and I set out on our morning walk, what should appear directly above us but a group of six or seven low-flying ducks, honking through the fog and trailing a few adoring doves. I don't know a mallard from a mullet, so I can't tell you the brand of duck, but they had rings around their necks. And they were obviously lost.
- Speaking of being lost, I watched the first ten minutes of "The Amazing Race" last night to see who had been selected as contestants for the next installment. I saw no one who made me want to watch another episode. The two gay guys were obviously chosen for their flaming stereotypical behavior, and the mother-son duo just creeped me out. The retired couple who promised to lie whenever necessary to get ahead might have been honest (?), but hardly attractive.
- I don't know when – or if – I'll get around to documenting the 2005 edition of the Lunatic Texans on Skis Tour, but I do need to share a bit of advice with you. If you're considering using a digital camera in a padded case strapped around your waist as cushioning against a fall when you encounter an unexpected four foot hole in the snow...don't. It's amazing how many simple everyday activities are affected by bruised ribs.
- OTOH, Olympus makes a mighty sturdy digital camera.
Wallace, I'm pretty sure these guys must have had colds or allergies, because they were definitely honking.
I've seen the waterfowl of which you speak, but it's a rare thing for them to venture over our neighborhood. I think the fog had them confused.
But, please, don't sic Burr on me.

We are not showing amazing race over here yet. For some daft reason they have put it off until later in the year along with survivor.
Posted by: Rachel at March 2, 2005 05:07 PMRachel, I'll take your word for that, because I've never watched a reality show long enough to really get involved. However, I suspect that your observation is precisely what the shows' producers are going for: they think they have to get increasingly outrageous characters in order to keep the audience coming back. Eventually, it just becomes a cartoon (assuming that it doesn't start out that way..."Fear Factor" comes to mind) and fades away. Just in time for the next ridiculous thing.

Oh ....Eric! Geese are generally said to "honk", ducks to "quack". Should I tell Burr Williams? If you would care to accompany me on my daily health walk around the Wadley-Barron Park I'll shall be glad to give you an in depth tour of duckdom....with some geese throwed in for good measure!
There is really quite an assortment of both currently in residence. Widgeons in profusion [they whistle..not quack], Buffleheads and Barrow's Golden Eyes which are diving ducks, Mallards, Barnyard ducks and a few mulatoes which are "dabblers". There are 3 Canada Geese [lesser Canadians] and some "speckled bellies"....juvenile snow geese as well as barnyard variety geese. A veritable plethora of water fowl right here in Midville!
