That was quick! ChevronTexaco to buy Unocal...

Worst case scenario for Midland has just been announced. Of all the possible suitors for Unocal, ChevronTexaco is -- in my book, anyway -- the least likely to leave the Pure Resources office intact and in Midland. The best hope is for a "white knight" to step in and buy Pure, which has many assets that can't possibly be considered core to ChevronTexaco. Expectations are that ChevronTexaco will immediately turn around and sell as much as $2 billion of Unocal's assets, so the possibility is not beyond imagining.

Reported purchase price: $18 billion. And with oil and gas prices being what they are and will continue to be, it's a bargain.

Terry, thanks for stopping by.

I visited your blog and read the post in question, and it is without a doubt one of the more clueless essays about gasoline prices I've read in a while. You write: "I am not especially smart." Perhaps that's true...I don't know you...and if it is, it's no shame; we all play the hand we're dealt. But that's no excuse for being especially uninformed, which your post clearly shows you to be.

You apparently have no concept of the basic laws of supply and demand, no clue about the dynamics of the global economy, and no qualms about claiming artificially low commodity prices as your birthright as an American citizen.

If you truly believe that (1) there's no shortage of gasoline, and (2) the American people are being preyed upon by all levels of...well, whoever they are, and you have the facts and insights to dispute the legitimate economic and political explanations for the situation we now find ourselves in, by all means, please share the facts that support your beliefs.

If this seems a bit harsh, at least I didn't make it a separate post as I was initially tempted to do. I respectfully suggest that you spend a little time researching some of the issues I mentioned above, and then if you still want to engage in an informed discussion about the current state of energy prices, I'll be happy to accommodate you.

Terry sounds like a teenager who just went to fill up his new Hemi-Powered Dodge pickup for the first time....

I love those comments on his website....."It's time Americans say we won't pay these prices anymore". To that I say...... more power to you Terry. Don't drive and don't turn your A/C on.

Oh, yeah! Well, what about that carburator some guy invented? The one that gives every vehicle 100 miles/gallon? 'They' bought him out and put it away, so gas prices would stay high! I know it's true ... my wife's friend knows a guy whose cousin met the inventor's brother! :-)
