MT hangs it up; blogging bad for business
No, not that MT, this MT. (Although it does make a terrific teaser title, now that I think about it. ;-)
Yep, Jared is hanging up the old blogging cap, at least until he completes his novel. I'm sorry to see him leave, and I'll especially miss his movie reviews. He does hold out the hope of returning eventually. I hope he does.
What I found interesting was his reference to this post (and the resulting comments) at Brandywine Books, in which is debated the idea that blogging and novel writing don't play well together. I'm sure this is very much an individual thing, but the thought that blogging potentially takes the good stuff out of a writer is probably worth considering. (On the flip side, some of the commenters thought that blogging improved their overall writing, and suggested that one well-known author should reconsider his refusal to blog. Meow.)
Fortunately, there's no danger of my ever becoming a novelist (or any other kind of paid writer, for that matter), and, really, if I ever do actually come up with any good stuff, I want to be sure and get it pixelated before I lose it. I'll let you know when that happens.
Anyway, Jared, best wishes for the novel, and I'm sure we'll be running into you other places in the blogosphere.
Jared, I'll try to post some lame movie reviews from time-to-time so you can see how much you're missed. ;-)

Thanks, Eric!
I want to be clear about my own motives in quitting, though, as it relates to writing novels. I never thought blogging was "taking my good stuff." It was just taking my time, energy, and focus. When I was both blogging and writing fiction, I know for a fact that I put more thought and talent into the fiction. Put I was just putting way more time and energy into blogging to the detriment of my career aspirations.
I think it is an individual thing, as you said, and if I aspired to be a "top-notch" blogger churning out post after substantive post challenging paradigms and revolutionizing readers' thinking and spirituality, I'm sure the quality of my fiction would suffer. As it is, it's jut the quantity that's suffering.
Anyway, thanks for the encouragement. I'll be around, I'm sure.
