Big Bend Open Road Race Results are up

Even though the heading on this page says "2004," the results shown are for the 2005 edition of the Big Bend Open Road Race run last Saturday, April 23, from Fort Stockton to Sanderson and back.

It's always interesting to see the wide variety of vehicles entered in this race, from Panteras to Mini-Coopers; station wagons to pickup trucks; Porsches to Jags. Be sure to browse the photo galleries where most, if not all the participants are on display, along with some of the local color. The ocotillos appeared to be in fine form on raceday.

Good pix, including the Ford GT40. Wonder if it's the real thing or a reproduction. We'll be down there when we get our Cobra.

A '63 Falcon? Now there's a gutsy driver.

Dang, Wallace, 53 large is still a chunk o'change. You could get Jack, Julie and yourself each a Sportster and have money left over for KD's Barbeque!

George, you do realize, don't you, that the winner last year was driving a Corvair?

Wallace, what about that car (was it a Cobra?) you were admiring in an Andrews car lot last year ... I remember you had a picture of it on "Streams."

Of course, whatever you drive, there's a speed group for you in BBORR. One extreme is the Unlimited Class ... I had thought of creating/entering the Extremely Limted Class.

While I was still working in Fort Stockton, I got a chance to see the World's Fastest Kia (http://www.davewolin.com/motorspo.htm), and meet its driver, Dave Wolin of California.

Yes, Jeff, your memory is good. I did look at a repro Cobra in Andrews. After doing more research and having talked to a friend who bought one, looks like the way to go is with a S. African company that makes the chasis and body, licensed by Carroll Shelby. The buyer puts the engine in thereafter. We talked with the Panoz Racing people in Dallas when they were here for the Chaparral opening....and they offer a nice Roush Racing built engine that delivers a smooth 550 h.p. That's the $53K version.

Um, you did notice that oil closed under $50 today, didn't you? ;-)

I call shotgun for the first blogger tour you give!
