Long Non-Blogging Weekend

Update (Friday, 17:16): Well, I'm never been one to pass up a good miracle, and while the city of Waco hasn't done the WiFi thing, the Best Western motel we're in does provide free WiFi! Doesn't mean that I'll necessarily be posting much -- family obligations do call -- but it's nice to know that I can provide a report on the deviled eggs and coconut cake if I so desire. I'm sure you're anxiously standing by. (Although why you're here to begin with is a mystery, since I told you below that there would be nothing new.)

As has been the tradition for the past three decades, the first weekend in June heralds the next edition of my wife's mother's family reunion. Unless a miracle has occurred and Waco has implemented free citywide WiFi since we last met there five years ago, don't look for any updates on the Gazette.

I am taking the PowerBook, however, and intend to have "Napoleon Dynamite" going in a continuous loop in our meeting room. I figure most of those folks -- hailing from places like Midlothian, Weatherford, Mount Pleasant and Sandia -- haven't had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Dynamite and it should be an eye-opening experience.

As for me, I hope to be overindulging on Cousin Wanda's deviled eggs and Aunt Kathy's coconut sheet cake (the one with a whole can of coconut milk drizzled into it...a myocardial infarction just waiting for a cue), while watching endless games of 42 and second-guessing the bids.

I hope your weekend is equally stress-free and family-friendly! Look for Content-Free Blogging™ to resume on Monday.

Not many days ago you were wondering aloud about the calories in a frappuccino! :-o

What am I going to do all weekend with no Gazette posts? I might actually have to write my sermon.

Have a wonderful time!

Have a good reunion, Eric!

From the sound of it, the food is going to be second only to the company (and yes, you've succeeded in making at least one of your readers hungry)!

By the way, Midlothian sounds (to me) like a location out of LOTR.

As in... "Midlothian Props: Screen Accurate Replicas From The Tolkien Trilogy."

I hope your weekend is family friendly....

This is a very mean thing to say since my family has run off to Europe.

Hope it all goes well for you this weekend. I like how content free has the trade mark on the end hehe.

What is it about family reunions and games of 42? Is 42 ever played any other time of the year? I don't suppose you could post the recipe to that coconut sheet cake at some point? I'm still trying to unlock the mystery of Arlington's citywide wi-fi. I know it's around here somewhere!

Have a great time! Looks like y'all might have a cool weekend. Or at least a not-too-hot one.

Eric, being from small towns, many of those folks probably know quite a few Napoleons (or at least a few families who are a lot like napoleons). they should enjoy seeing them on the screen, though. ;-)

Wallace, I didn't mean to rub salt in your wound. On the other hand, they did invite you to go along with them, so I'm not sure how much sympathy to expend on you. ;-)

Rachel, it's a low-stress weekend for me, since I'm an in-law. Expectations are low going in, if you know what I mean.

Actually, Denise, there are 42 clubs in every small town in Texas; you just have to be the right age to know about them. For those of us under 70, however, family reunions are the main arenas of exposure. As far as the coconut cake recipe, I'll ask, but you know how aunts can be about sharing their secrets. And, finally, I don't think "cool" is going to be the operative term for Waco. The forecast is for temps near 90 and humidity to match. Yuck. This is tough duty for a west Texas desert guy.

Bryan, you make a good point about the Everyman Nerdicity of Napoleon. In fact, the danger may be that they think it's a documentary. ;-)

Don't forget to feed Tina.
