Blogathon 2005
The date for Blogathon 2005 has been announced: Friday Saturday, August 6.
If you're unfamiliar with Blogathon, it's essentially a "blogging marathon for charity" in which bloggers agree to post more or less continuously for 24 hours in exchange for sponsorship as pledged by agreeable readers. All proceeds from the pledges go to a charity of the participating blogger's choice.
The event was last held in 2003 (2004 was a washout, for some unexplained reason). I was a minor sponsor for Julie Niedlinger's excellent efforts, and seeing her in action made me decide to consider being a participant myself. I've never done anything for 24 consecutive hours (not counting breathing), so I don't know if I'm up to this challenge.
Feel free to weigh in as to whether you think I should give this a try or not (keeping in mind that "go for it" votes are automatically added to the potential sponsors list! ;-)
Technorati tag: Blogathon
National Association to Send Bloggers to Disneyland?
I like your thinking! ;-)
We'll have to wait and see how the Blogathon board sets up this year's event. My recollection is that in 2003 there was a list of "approved charities" from which you could choose. Julie, for example, chose "Doctors Without Borders," which I thought was an excellent selection. If the rules allow for more discretion, I'll still probably go with an international relief organization like DWB or the Red Cross...or, perhaps, World Vision.
Thanks for the show of support! I think. (I'm still not sure about the 24 hour thing...wonder if Starbucks would agree to extend its operating hours for one night?)
Posted by: Eric at June 12, 2005 04:03 PMThis is a great idea. I tried this in 2002, but it was a last minute decision and I ran out of steam. I also had to work in the nursery the next Sunday morning, so it was sort of a bad idea anyway. I'd thought about doing the Blogathon this year, but just can't see sitting at my computer 24 hours straight. :) I'd certainly be open to sponsoring somebody though. I say go for it!

Duly noted (or, should I say, in anticipation of the actual event, dully noted?). Thanks for the encouragement!
Posted by: Eric at June 12, 2005 04:54 PMI'm in -- as a sponsor. No way I'm sitting at a computer for 24 hours.
Posted by: Jim at June 12, 2005 06:09 PMThanks, Jim. Of course, just hypothetically speaking, if one was imaginative and organized enough, one could do all of one's posts in advance, and then just wake up a couple of times each hour to upload 'em. That's just hypothetical, of course.
Posted by: Eric at June 12, 2005 09:47 PMEric,
Sounds like a winner to me. I would like to use any receipts in the Fund from now to August for your sponsorship.
Posted by: SGT. Will at June 12, 2005 11:36 PMHey, thanks for the reminder. My sister did this in 2003 and I was all set to do it last year. I'll have to think about it for this year - life just got crazy, but I'd love to try.
I think you should do it, btw.
Posted by: jen at June 13, 2005 09:56 AMWill, that's very generous of you (why am I not surprised? ;-), but I'm sure the Fund donors are hoping you and your wife will use those donations for something of more direct benefit to you. Of course, there are no restrictions placed on how you guys use the funds. Well, let's see what occurs between now and August. I may still wimp out.
Jen, you've got an unfair advantage...I'll bet you could blog for 24 consecutive hours just about wedding plans and not break a sweat! ;-) Or rope Beau into doing a teamathon thing...
Posted by: Eric at June 13, 2005 11:00 AMHeh. Even I am tiring of wedding central...
Posted by: jen at June 13, 2005 03:48 PMThe blogathon site has no info. How did you find out about the Aug. 6 date? Is this year being arranged through the blogathon.org site, or are bloggers just going ahead and doing it themselves?
I'd like to do it again...but that was some serious work.
Hmmm.
Posted by: Julie at June 14, 2005 11:17 PMJulie, there's a Blogathon Yahoo Group mailing list, and I received a notice of the August 6 date via that list. That notice said that more information would be available via the Blogathon website "soon" (whatever that means). They need to get with it, as time is rapidly passing.
I'm sure that the Blogathon was hard work for you. After all, I doubt that anyone else was creating a new piece of artwork and posting it every hour!
Posted by: Eric at June 15, 2005 06:34 AMThe site is live now, though the back-end isn't quite ready, apparently.
Eric, August 6th is a Saturday, not a Friday. You had me madly scrambling for my diary when I read that. ;-)
Posted by: Nic Dafis at June 17, 2005 07:19 AMNic, sorry about the confusion on the day; I must be suffering from "calendric dyslexia." ;-)
Posted by: Eric at June 17, 2005 07:47 AMDon't worry about it. I don't know what day it is *today*.

Eric, I would like to know what your choice of charity might be (National Association to Send Bloggers to Disneyland?), but sign me up as a sponsor.
