States Meme

Jim over at Serotoninrain posted his results on a new meme, and after seeing his, I decided that my life rates a minus 6 on the gypsy scale. Here's what I'm talking about:

Bold the states you've been to, underline the states you've lived in and italicize the state you're in now...

Alabama / Alaska / Arizona / Arkansas / California / Colorado / Connecticut / Delaware / Florida / Georgia / Hawaii / Idaho / Illinois / Indiana / Iowa / Kansas / Kentucky / Louisiana / Maine / Maryland / Massachusetts / Michigan / Minnesota / Mississippi / Missouri / Montana / Nebraska / Nevada / New Hampshire / New Jersey / New Mexico / New York / North Carolina / North Dakota / Ohio / Oklahoma / Oregon / Pennsylvania / Rhode Island / South Carolina / South Dakota / Tennessee / Texas / Utah / Vermont / Virginia / Washington / West Virginia / Wisconsin / Wyoming / Washington D.C. /

I haven't set foot in well over half the states in this great nation. And some of those I've visited were of the changing-flights-at-the-airport type of encounter.

[OTOH, I have been to Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Saba, St. Martin/St. Maarten, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Honduras, Guanaja, Mexico and the Turks & Caicos. Surely that counts for something.]

Update: I just realized that my mother is probably going to leave a comment and point out that we did live in Arkansas for a few months when I was just a tyke. I've spent decades trying to block that out of my mind...and have apparently succeeded. (No offense to any readers from Arkansas. You have a very lovely state.)

Wow, an interesting exercise. I ended up having lived in 10, and visited 22 others ... growing up in a military family will do that ... working a few years as an archaeologist added a few to the list, as well.

Thanks for sharing the link.

Military families have the one-ups on us root-planters.

I, too, suffer from a lack of state exposure.

I guess my trips are all oilfield related. Going to have to start traveling more (for fun!)!

Thanks for sharing, glad y'all are back from vacation!

Actually, Eric, we lived in Arkansas only six weeks while your dad was taking some courses at University of Arkansas. We celebrated your 4th birthday during that time.

You've been to all three of the ABC Islands. I'm impressed.

Need these seven to make 50 visited: Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Oregon, Wyoming, Montana, N Dakota. Have seen (but not set foot in) four of those from the air (Oregon, Montana, Idaho) or from across a lake (Wyoming).

Lived in seven states: Illinois, Iowa, Ohio, Georgia, Missouri, Kansas, Texas (then back to Missouri) in that order. Currently living in Missouri (but working in Georgia). Have children who were born in Kansas and Missouri.

My eldest spent his fourth birthday in Euless, Texas. When he was two he learned to say the names of geometric shapes; circle, square, triangle, Texas.

I also lived in Montreal, Canada for two years ('66 and '67). My favorite place to live is Missouri. Not too big (Dallas). Not too small (Topeka). Just right.

Thanks for the trip down Memory Lane.

peace,

Don't be. "A" and "C" were both airport stays. However, we've spent three weeks on Bonaire during various dive trips. It's our favorite dive destination, hands down.

When he was two he learned to say the names of geometric shapes; circle, square, triangle, Texas.

"Train up a child in the way he should go..." Good work, Larry! ;-)

Mother, six weeks in Arkansas probably seemed like months at the time. But, I don't remember my fourth birthday; I hope I got something good.

Janie, at least you've been to Alaska (as I recall...?), unlike most of the other folks who have responded to this meme.

CP, that's my story, too: putting down roots! ;-)

I've been told by a couple of other people that Bonaire is a world class dive location. Don't know why they told me that, I don't dive, though I have snorkeled once or twice.

Posted by: Jim at July 7, 2005 08:56 AM

Bonaire is a snorkler's paradise, as well. The reef is close to shore and has never been overfished, like many of the islands closer to the States, and the water teems with exotic sealife. The whole offshore area is a marine refuge, in fact.
