Welcome, MRT Readers

If you're coming here by way of Jimmy Patterson's Blogathon article in this morning's MRT, welcome to my, um, virtual kingdom (look for more on that unfortunate appellation later).

By way of updating that article, Blogathon pledges in support of Midland Fair Havens now exceed $1,000 and that total continues to grow with new commitments showing up in my inbox this morning already. You can check the latest total here, and also make a pledge online. The Blogathon website isn't the most user-friendly for pledgers (something I hope they'll fix before next year's event) so if you want to skip the online effort, just email me (my address is linked in the right hand column of this page) and I'll register your pledge on your behalf.

Blogathon is something fun for me to do (OK...so I'm a little challenged in the "fun department"), but the real goal is to raise awareness -- and money -- to benefit a very worthy organization doing great work for your fellow west Texans. Every pledge, regardless of size, is welcomed and important.

Muchas gracias, amigos! And feel free to come back on Saturday (if not sooner) to see if I can really stay awake for 24 hours. The Las Vegas oddsmakers aren't particularly optimistic...

Man o' man....anybody so rich and famous as to get his picture on the front page of the big city newspaper ought to do pretty well in a blog o'thon.

How many times is this now that you've had a feature story in the MRT??

As the new pastor at the FUMC of Midland sez, "you want more exposure...up your level of giving".

I hate to say it, but as a photojournalist, I am now officially sick of the "blogger in profile typing on the computer" photograph. They should have gotten you on your bike or something.

More pix! Where's the tri-photo triangularized layout depicting you at, um, work... and at play? Where's the photo of you pretend-flying your rocket geek gizmo while making rocket engine sound effects?

Posted by: Jim at August 4, 2005 02:21 PM

Bryan, as a photojournalist you may be sick of those photos, but as a local blogger in a small market it's solid gold, know what I mean? When half the people you talk to ask "what's a blog?" there's not a thing wrong with giving another visual association between person and computer.

I know your bike suggestion was a bit tongue-in-cheek, but the local MS 150 charity bike ride just finished a week or so ago, and a photo of that kind probably wouldn't have been the best thing for clarifying the nature of fundraising efforts. ;-)

Jim, you'll have to tune in on Saturday for the really good stuff. BTW, I just got back from a meeting so I'm heading over to your place to get a report on your mom. I assume she's doing well, since you took the time to come here and comment.

Well, with the help of your lovely bride, the campaign is doing quite well. Now, about her cheapskate oil baron husband... ;-)

How many times is this now that you've had a feature story in the MRT??

Oh, you know, you just lose count after awhile, sort of like Jen and Brad and Angelina showing up in People or whatever.

It helps to have some "interesting" photos of certain local journalists as incentive to keep plugging your gig.

Bring. It. On. :)

Posted by: Laurence Simon at August 4, 2005 03:53 PM

Why, Laurence, if I didn't know better I'd think you were responding to an imaginary challenge.

You must be imagining this, since there's no way that I -- with aspirations of someday making the D-list and blogging on behalf of a charity in a tiny town like Midland -- would ever challenge an A-lister like yourself, right in the heart of oil billionaire country.

Well, unless the handicap was right. How does 5-to-1 sound? ;-)

[Just kidding, of course. Good luck with the 'thon.]

I just got back from a meeting

You just said that so we'd think you were working.

you'll have to tune in on Saturday for the really good stuff

Oh, I plan on it.

Posted by: Jim at August 4, 2005 06:48 PM

Oh, I plan on it.

That sounds vaguely threatening.

I may have to alter my game plan.

Posted by: Eric at August 4, 2005 07:47 PM

I've tried many times but have never gotten the knack of being threatening. Perhaps I'm better at it when it's unintentional.

Don't worry about updating any plans. But I will be looking forward to every post--especially those that involve guitars.

I've tried many times...

I'll just bet you have.

But I will be looking forward to every post--especially those that involve guitars.

There you go again.

I'm thinking of changing to a clarinet-based approach.

Hey, nice article! I hope it generates a lot more donations for Fair Havens.

I see you fixed the supernova in the back yard. Nice shirt, too. I guess that's a nice change from the usual blogging jammies. ;)

Posted by: denise at August 4, 2005 09:12 PM

Denise, those are my jammies!

But the article did seem to help with the donations. We got another $300 or so in pledges today, and that's good stuff.

Congratulations Eric, such high praise and profile. Congratulations.

Hey, Dan...long time, no hear! Thanks for stopping by! Trust things are going well in the Land of Oz.
