New Design: IE Bug Squashed

I think I've fixed the CSS rollover problem with the sidebar links that cause them to disappear in Internet Explorer.

It appears that the browser was choking on the negative margin settings I used to get a border-to-border fill in background color on the a:hover attribute. Once I set the margins to zero, the weird behavior stopped.

Unfortunately, as is often the case, the fix causes new problems, but in this case they're more bearable. The links are spaced more widely than I want, but that's just a cosmetics issue and I think I know a solution. Real work and life calls, however, so that will have to wait. Thanks for your patience...

Eric, I like the rollover effect better, now. I think the black I get (as opposed to the darker shade of gray) when I roll over the link complements the overall color scheme of the website. I agree with you though, about the spacing ... it does seem to make for an unecessarily long column. I will look forward to seeing the results of the solution you mentioned.

If your CafePress products change, as well, I'll have to get a new coffee mug ... it makes my piņon-roasted coffee taste so much better! :-)

Jeff, I don't know what I'll do about the CafePress stuff. If anything, I may just add something tacky about IE to the current design! ;-)

Looks really good! You might add fangs to your fireant though, he is misleadingly harmless looking.

Are you tubing down your street, yet?

CP, everyone knows that my ant's, um, bark is worse than his bite!

We did get another inch of rain this morning, and more is in the forecast. Abbye is not a happy camper.

Today, your sitemeter stats showed that 58% of your activity comes from IE, various releases. Too early to write IE users off.

Your new design comes through on my cell phone browser, just like before. I think my phone uses Mozilla/4.0 (MobilePhone MM-5600/US/1.0) NetFront/3.1. It does not have javascript capabilites so I can't post from the phone, only read.

I think your new site design looks great although it is more vanilla than before. At least bring back the wireframe fireant in the background. It gave your site a distinctly personal identity. I see it up there in the corner, but it is so small it looks like an ant from here.

Larry, I'm certainly not "writing off" IE; the new design works fine in the latest versions. But it will choke older versions of IE (as well as Netscape). My own dad can no longer see the site on his ancient Mac...but my mother can, as she's running Firefox on OS X. I'm glad to hear the site is viewable on your cell phone.

I apologize for my ant looking like an ant. I didn't mean for that to happen. ;-)

Hi Eric,

Maybe it's just my IE barfing, but I can't get any of the archive links on your site to open, even August 2005.

I get the index of monthly archives, the list of months and hotlinks, but the links don't take me anywhere.

I hope this is something (a) that only affects some people, and (b) can be solved. One time I went back and looked at your first blog entry. Although you looked at it as one small step at the time, you have created quite a world here in the interim.

This is an accolade: You sir, ARE the MSM as far as I'm concerned. I come here first, before I check in to the views from the other 5 billion souls on the planet.

Keep on keepin' on.

Larry, it's not just you; the monthly archives appear to be hosed. I've tried rebuilding the site, but they're still missing.

Oddly enough, the category archives are still available, even though when I FTP into the directory where they're stored, they don't show up.

I didn't do anything in the redesign that should have affected the archives, but the timing is awfully suspicious.

I don't think I'm up to the pressure you're putting on me! ;-)

Keeping a site such at this content-free(tm) makes for an anxiety-ridden day, I suspect. Good form, though.

Say, if form follows function, and the function is a content-free(tm) blog, what form should the web site take? Should it have any form at all? Or, once taken, why would it be changed?

Just syllogizing for no good reason and to no good end. And we all know the end does not necessarily justify the means.

Pay no attention to the man behind the blog.

'Twas brillig....etc.

Pay no attention to the man behind the blog.

I've been saying that for years! ;-)
