Kat Watch

The nonstop coverage of Hurricane Katrina is mesmerizing in the same awful way that the scene of a multi-car accident in the other lane of the interstate draws your eye as you travel past it. It doesn't affect you directly, but you wonder if anyone you know was involved, and you hope that it wasn't really as bad as it looks.

In this case, Katrina has already affected a friend, albeit one I know only via his blog. Daniel Morris over at From Behind the Wall of Sleep has packed up and headed for high ground, but his final post is both sad and encouraging, even in its brevity:

Predictions dire. Everyone leaving. Expect to lose the house. My center cannot hold. Situation excellent. Advancing on Texas. Thanks for prayers, they will help. Be safe, be loved, be excellent to each other, always.

Expect to lose the house. That makes it real, doesn't it?

You probably also know someone who's life and/or property is in harm's way. This is as good a time as any to take a minute or two and pray for them, if you haven't already done so.

Lord, keep them safe.

In fact, we should pray for them even if we don't know anyone in harm's way. I can sympathize to a certain extent, since we had a tornado hit our house 6 years ago. But the people of N.O. will have so much more to face than we did, if Katrina stays on its current course.

As a fellow coast dweller, all the people in the path of this 'cane are in my prayers.

I've got the same disease....I'm glued to the news and watching the developments and i can't break away.

We lived in New Orleans for 3 years prior to moving to Midland eons ago. Our house used to flood with 3 or 4 inch rains....can only image what a 25 ft. storm surge over 15 ft. levees will do!
