"Be still, and know..."

One of my favorite CDs is Terry McMillan's bluesy "Somebody's Comin'." McMillan is perhaps best known for his skill with the harmonica but he also is a gifted singer and arranger. I think of him as Christian music's Delbert McClinton...and I wish he'd record another album. (Incidentally, the album is available for purchase and download via the iTunes Music Store.)

Anyway, one of the songs on that CD is entitled "Be Still," and it's an absolutely magnificent interpretation of Psalm 46. This Psalm is a testimony to God's sovereign power and His unfailing provision in times of distress. If ever we needed a reminder of those facts, it's right now.

McMillan's rendition of the Psalm goes like this:

Chorus: Be still, my child...be still.
Be still and know He is God.
Your wars will will cease
When He speaks peace
Be still and know He is God
Oh, be still and know He is God.

The waters may roar and be troubled;
The earth may shake violently.
There is a river of calmness
In Jesus within you and me.

Chorus

What kind of love is this that we see,
Removing all fears and all doubts?
The Lord my God,
He is in control...
Behold Him as He works it out.

Chorus

My prayer today is simple: "God, remind me that You are, indeed, in control. Help me to be still in Your presence, and give me eyes to perceive the many ways that You are working things out."
