Naomi Wolf, Barking Moonbat of the Day

The next time Fox News deems it necessary to its "Fair and Balanced Reporting" to give feminist author and political advisor Naomi Wolf airtime to discuss anything more consequential than whether it's really OK to wear white shoes after Labor Day, I hope it will give some advance notice so that those of us who are trying to eat lunch during the broadcast can have someone trained in the Heimlich-maneuver standing by.

I just watched a mini-debate between her and author/American Civil Rights Institute-founder Ward Connerly about the federal government's culpability in the presumed slow response in giving assistance to New Orleans after the hurricane. Wolf was predictably all about "it's Bush's fault." Here's how Protein Wisdom sums up the "discussion," as a part of a much broader post on the general subject:

Moments ago on FOX, Naomi Wolf, whose credibility as a spokesperson for anything continues to boggle, parroted the Dem talking points—embroidering them a bit to bump up the racial angle and to exascerbate Bush’s responsibility. “It’s sad,” she said, “that the President waited for an invitation to the biggest dance this country has ever seen” (paraphrased). After trotting out the standard “vacation” theme, Ms Wolf attempted to hammer home her point by citing as precedent Harrison Ford’s actions in Air Force One, where he was “completely in charge and, in an emergency, recovening staff” (paraphrased)

Ward Connerly’s wonderful response: “If horse manure were music, that would be a symphony.”

Granted, Connerly's response lacked a certain sophistication, but, frankly, I don't know how else one might respond to someone who's dead serious about the fact that if Harrison Ford could do it on-screen, how freakin' hard could it be in real life? Or, perhaps she was thinking that Hollywood is Real Life, and that the rest of the world can and should be shaped to fit that image?

Whatever. Wolf just kept bringing the zingers, exhilaratingly oblivious to the facts. "Bush was too busy chopping wood on vacation to watch the Weather Channel" (paraphrased); "Monday passed, then Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and now we come to this." (paraphrase...but she does get credit for having command of the days of the week). In response to Connerly's pointing out that the federal government has no authority to unilaterally step into a situation like this until the local (mayor of NOLA) and state (governor) officials request it, she replied with the quote provided above about "not having an invitation to the dance." She went on to say that the federal government seemed to be plenty competent as far as the evacuation of "middle class white people" was concerned. Huh?

If this is the level of conversation we can expect for the next twelve months, I think I'll just unplug all the TVs in the house and make NetFlix rue the day they offered unlimited rentals for a flat fee.

I just read back through the post before publishing it and found that I had referred to Naomi Watts instead of Wolf THREE times! Wishful thinking, no doubt.

Eric, unplugging your TVs (you have more than one? wow!) is okay ... as long as you plug them back in and watch our news at six and ten ... less moonbats, less often! :-)

I stopped watching television news quite some time ago and am a Netflix dude. This sort of thing is also why I'm pulling away from the blogosphere.

Beware Netflix, though, cause it may end up costing you more than you think if you want to make good use of it.

...less moonbats, less often!

Now that's a marketing campaign that might have some legs!

This sort of thing is also why I'm pulling away from the blogosphere.

That's cold, man. ;-)

But, I agree with you; I try to stay away from the political blogs, and I try to avoid posting about such things, but I just can't help myself, sometimes.

Anyway, having been a Netflix family for years, I think we can successfully avoid getting sucked into the vortex, if for no other reason than it's getting harder to find good movies to watch.

Two things:

1. Who's Naomi Watts?

2. What's a TV?

Posted by: Jim at September 7, 2005 02:51 PM

OK, the TV thing I can dig. But you don't remember Jet Girl from "Tank Girl"?

Well, stay tuned for the upcoming remake of "King Kong," and you'll see who Naomi Watts is.

Oh, THAT Naomi Watts.

Posted by: Jim at September 7, 2005 03:15 PM

Silly Jim, don't you know EVERYTHING bad that happens is Bush's fault? He controls the winds, the waves, and the butterflies that fly in Central Park. Bush is the phantom menace that stalks at night and the secret leader of Al-Qaeda. He's also responsible for the fall of mankind and Satan's expulsion from heaven. Don't you know that EVERYTHING is Bush's fault?

:)

...and I meant Eric, not Jim. But Jim can laugh if he wants to, as well.

Careful, Jim gets testy when you call him by the wrong name. I'm still limping after the last little episode.

I think Stephen's trying to leave comments on too many blogs at the same time.

And I DID know that everthing was Bush's fault, but it's nice of you guys to finally admit it.

No, I'm kidding. I didn't vote for him but I think this whole blame Bush thing is pretty facile. I read a funny post today, you've probably seen it already but here it is.

Jim, even that humorous post was spoiled by the comments.

Posted by: Eric at September 7, 2005 08:52 PM

Hmmm... I guess you're right. I didn't look at those. sigh. That wasn't intentional by the way.

No problemo, amigo. To tell the truth, these kinds of things don't even make my top 50 list of Important Stuff To Get Worked Up Over.

I'm gonna go watch the OK Go video again. That's the good stuff! ;-)
