"The Weather Man" Gets it Wrong?

Here's what Pulitzer-prize winning film critic Joe Morgenstern has to say about Nicholas Cage's new movie, coming today to a megaplex near you:

Are you feeling better than you think you should? Do you need an antidote for infectious optimism? Have I got a movie for you. "The Weather Man," which was directed by Gore Verbinski, is a guaranteed downer that's devoid of any upside, and free of dangerously entertaining side effects.

"Free of dangerously entertaining side effects." Heh.

I don't always agree with Joe's take on movies, but I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt on this one.

When will Nicholas Cage retire?

Retire? Just when he's finally getting that furrowed-brow, brooding, depressed look perfected? Who would we turn to for that in his absence?

Well, I guess there's always William Macy.

The difference between the two is Macy can act.

Well, I think that's being a bit unfair to Cage. I think he's capable of turning in some outstanding performances ("Matchstick Men" and "Guarding Tess" come to mind) in the right movies. I also think he does well in action movies ("Con Air" and "The Rock" being two examples).

I do agree that Macy can generally act circles around him...but that's no shame. He can out-act about 95% of Hollywood.

"He" being Bill Macy, in that last sentence. Just for clarification.

Unfair? So? I'm a blogger. I'm part of a 20 million person lynch mob. Blogging is how unfair gets done. :-D

... pay no attention to the man behind that comment. He's punchy after a week of fourteen hour workdays.

Hey, man, I'm just trying to protect you from a restraining order from Cage's legal eagles.

But, if it comes, your posse will back you up. Unless William Macy tells us otherwise.

And I posted that job notice for your benefit, amigo.

If Nicholas Cage is in a movie, it's either:

a) A downer.
b) Confusing in its artiness

Exceptions? Hmm. Con Air. National Treasure. That movie he played the airhead California valley guy in.

"Gone in 60 Seconds" was pretty straightforward, but that may have been before his artsy gene got inflamed.
