West Texas Cox Users: Time for a new email address
It just occurred to me that with the announcement that St. Louis-based Cebridge Connections is acquiring the west Texas cable and internet operations of Cox Communications, those of us who are Cox customers will have to get new email addresses. While the transaction isn't expected to close until the second quarter of 2006, it's not too early to start thinking about the change.
I'm contemplating switching my non-business email over to my Gmail account, which I've had for a year but haven't used much at all. If you're a Cox customer and would like an invitation to set up a Gmail account (currently the only way to get one is via invitation from someone with an account), I have more than 90 invitations and would be happy to send you one. Just leave your name and email address in a comment (if you put your email address in the provided input field on the comment form, I'll be able to see it but it will NOT appear anywhere in public, as long as you ALSO enter something -- anything -- in the URL field; this is probably the best approach for protecting your privacy) and I'll get one out to you.
If you're not familiar with Gmail, it's Google's free email service, similar to those provided by Yahoo and Hotmail.

Jim, that's useful feedback; thanks for sharing it. I had not heard about those problems, which aren't insignificant.
Posted by: Eric at November 3, 2005 10:08 AMI went that way a while ago, after the @home.com->@attbi.com->@comcast.com fiasco.
Posted by: Phelps at November 3, 2005 11:31 AMPhelps, we also ended up at Cox via Home.com. Quite annoying.

I already have gmail as you know. You mentioned that you don't use it all that much so I thought I'd mention a couple things.
Just a reminder, like you need it, that it's still beta and as a beta it does have its quirks. For instance, currently my outlook won't query the gmail inbox unless there's something new and unread sitting in it. It's been doing this for two days now. Gmail has gone away completely a couple of times. You just never know.
On the other hand, I really like the way it tracks conversations as opposed to simply listing discrete messages. That's very cool. You know me, I'm all about conversation. The archiving and "star" features are nice as well.
I don't know when they intend to un-betaize it, but maybe if you use all your invites and I use mine...
