BatesLine on Faith and Politicians
Tulsa blogger Michael Bates is truly a "citizen-journalist." His BatesLine is one of the better examples of how a blog can influence and even replace a traditional news outlet for the delivery of commentary on local events.
He now has an editorial in Tulsa's "alternative" newspaper, Urban Tulsa in which he responds to criticism he received after referring to certain local politicians as "men of devout Christian faith." Of course, the criticism was generated because he used that faith to connote something positive about those men...as a reason why they -- and those like them -- are perhaps more effective in carrying out their responsibilities.
Michael's column is worth reading whether you care anything about Tulsa politics or not. It contains some universal truths about why Christianity and politics can mix without diluting the former or distorting the latter. If nothing else, perhaps it will give some critics of "religious politicians" a better understanding of why many of those politicians are not hesitant to refer to the role that faith plays in their lives...and politics.
