Friday Morning Observations

  • Photographing a guitar is harder than you might imagine, especially when it's a custom job with lots of intricate detailed inlay and contrasting wood colors.

  • We hit 84° yesterday; parts of west Texas were over ninety. I'm not a huge fan of cold weather (unless I'm on skis), but this is ridiculous. I'm running out of excuses for not washing the car, and there's something perverted about mowing the lawn in November.

  • I hope someone is frisking Hugo Chavez before he gets in the same room with President Bush. As mental whack jobs go, Hugo is running a close second to his hero, Fidel.

  • A pleasant surprise in this morning's sports page: Bart Bryant, my second cousin, leads the Tour Championship golf tournament by two strokes after the first round. Bart shot a course record 62 yesterday. In case you don't follow golf, the Tour Championship is an invitation-only event featuring the top 30 money winners from the PGA Tour...meaning that only the best of the best get to compete. Besides being a fantastic addition to one's resume, a win is also lucrative, worth more than a million bucks. That would be a pleasing addition to the $2 million Bart has already won this year.

  • Birthday greetings to fellow blogger and all-around good guy Daniel Morris, who turns 41 today. As you may recall, Dan and family lost their home in Slidell, LA to Katrina, and he's been working to restore some semblance of normality to their lives. I'm sure he'd appreciate it if you'd stop by and leave a word of encouragement and a birthday greeting on his latest post, in which he's finally able to share a little good news.

Are you going to share some shot of that custom guitar with your loyal readers?

Adding in some digital photo tips, what the problems you encountered were and how you overcame them would definitely flesh out a "no content" post. ;-)

Actually, it's "custom guitars," as in, "five of them." I'm building a website for a local luthier and he doesn't have any good photos of his work. I can't guarantee that he will after I finish either, but I'll give it my best shot.

I may post some pics if any of them turn out to be worthy. But one tip I can pass along: photographing in natural sunlight, outdoors, solves a myriad of problems while creating only a few minor and manageable ones.

If you don't have the right indoor lighting, natural sunlight is wonderful on custom guitars and their contrasting wood colors.

And when will you be posting more audio of your guitar strummin'?

And when will you be posting more audio of your guitar strummin'?

Such musical travesties occur only when stimulated by the pledging of cash money, ala Blogathon. And then, only in the wee hours of consciousness.
