The Gold Standard of Insufferability
I see that gold prices hit a 22 year high today, closing at over $500/ounce. I fear that means that we'll be seeing even more of that insufferably unctuous British woman pitching the Vienna Philharmonic gold coins on the Monex telly ads.
I would never refer to you as "the gold standard."
Wait. That didn't come out right.

Posted by: Eric at December 1, 2005 05:40 PMI guess I need to go ferret out my gold Canadian Maple Leaf coin and my go Mexican gold piece...both 1 oz. There around here somewhere [note to thieves who might visit Eric's site. This is a metaphor....the coins are actually securely kept in a safe deposit box].
I've always wondered about people who "invest" in gold. In my opinion, doomsdayists and naysayers mainly. I need to study a gold price chart but if I'm not mistaken the price now is roughly what it was during my first tour as a stock broker in the mid '70's. Not much of a long term investment.
There around here somewhere
Actually that should be "they're" around here....
I just may invest them gold coins in some of them English lessons. And delete the random--go-- in the first paragraph while you're at it.
Posted by: Wallace-Midland, Texas at December 1, 2005 07:01 PMI have a 1/4 oz Kreugerrand stowed in a safe deposit box, along with a bunch of silver coins that we bought back when the Hunts were cornering the silver market.
Gold prices had a big run-up during 1979, starting around $250/oz and spiking at around $850/oz in early 1980. But by the end of '81, it was back under $400.
Overall, in the past 30 years, I'd say it's barely kept up with inflation, if even that. This is an excellent resource for tracking precious metals prices.
Posted by: Eric at December 1, 2005 07:40 PMWallace,
I actually thought "go Mexican" was some sort of slogan emblazoned on the aforesaid gold piece. A true collector's item if it existed, I'm sure.

I linked over here real quick 'cause I saw the title and figured it was a post about me.
Relieved it's actually about that British woman.
