Long Kong
I just discovered that King Kong runs three hours and seven minutes. Yikes.
When you consider travel time to and from the theater and early arrival time to get the gorilla-sized tub of popcorn, a gallon of diet Coke and a seat that's more than six feet away from the screen, you're talking a commitment of more than four hours to this movie.
I don't think I'm ready for that kind of commitment just yet, especially not at this busy time of year.
I also wonder -- as have you, I'm sure -- if director Peter Jackson thought to put in about five minutes of boring stuff around the 90 minute mark for, you know, a rest stop.

I remember going to Minneapolis to a huge curved screen to see a movie which had no intermission. The theater added one! The movie wasn't inordinately long as I recall but I was grateful for the break because it gave me a chance to see the also curved ladies room. That was quite impressive for a child. The theme had been carried to the concession stand as well. I don't think we had curved popcorn boxes, though.
Posted by: phyllis at December 17, 2005 08:33 AMI'm trying to recall movies with intermissions in the theatrical version. I'm pretty sure that "Dr. Zhivago" and "Fiddler on the Roof" had one; did "The Sound of Music"? I can't remember.
Posted by: Eric at December 17, 2005 11:11 AMI'm pretty sure "Heaven's Gate" did. In the hoary old days of video discs, you could go for a rest stop when changing sides/ discs.

Exactly!
Posted by: Eric at December 17, 2005 02:42 PMI think "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World" had an intermission.
Posted by: Jon at December 17, 2005 06:04 PMWe did go see the movie this morning and I believe you made a good choice to wait it out. I got bored with the action on the island and at the end as it was so predictable. My hubby, however, enjoyed the special effects and the action scenes much more than I. He rated it a 4 star and I rated it a 2-1/2.
Posted by: Nancy at December 17, 2005 06:33 PMJon, I think you're right...I do seem to remember that being the case, even when they showed it on TV (in the early days...now they won't give up the ad time).
Nancy, it's not like there's going to be any real surprises in this movie, right? I suppose that in this case, it's the journey, not the destination, that's the big draw. For those who are f/x and action fans, that might be enough, but as you astutely observe, not everyone falls into that category.

ahh, A discerning man (diet coke!)! Very impressive! Me, I'm waiting til it comes out on DVD, then it won't matter if he's put an a piece suitable for a break LOL.
