Reggie who?

Vince Young - 40 41; USC - 38.

Enough of whether the BCS is broken; somebody needs to fix the Heisman balloting. (And I use "fix" in the sense of "repair," don't you know?)

One of the best college football games I've ever seen and probably the best example of a single player making the difference in a game, in spite of two Heisman winners on the other side!

I agree with Wallace on both counts. I was pulling for Texas, going into this game (my adopted home, and all). But, the team I was really boosting in the bowl games was Penn State ... who provided another good night of football, Tuesday night.

Earlier this week, msnbc.com's Joey Johnston wrote, "... why Vince Young — not Reggie Bush, the Heisman winner, or Matt Leinart, the quarterback with a 37-1 record — is the most important player in the Jan. 4 Rose Bowl ..."

He was right. He wasn't the only one who thought so, going into Wednesday night's game ... but, I thought he said it very well.

Young is 'Keep-The-Kids-Up-Late-And-Let-'Em-Watch' kind of special.

There are 11 Big 12 coaches (and at least one PAC-10 coach) meeting in fervent prayer for Young to enter the NFL draft this year.

Young's low standing in the Heisman voting probably meshes with the bile that came out of many quarters towards Texas in the six weeks (and in some cases longer) leading up to the Rose Bowl. There wasn't just a feeling that Team X, which changed during the course of the season, should be ranked No. 2, there was a certain hostility towards the idea that Texas was ranked second that was strangely passionate for a team that hadn't finished No. 1 in 36 years. Those folks didn't seem to want to give the Horns credit for anything, and if any of those were Heisman voters, they probably wouldn't even put Young ahead of Marcus Vick in their voting, let alone Bush or Leinart.

(I could get political about this, and think that certain people were actually equating Texas, the football team, to Texas, the Red State and home of the other Bush guy from Crawford, which would explain their unusually strong contempt for UT being in the Rose Bowl. Of course, people like this have never been near the Austin campus, or they might understand that burnt orange colors nonwithstanding, the area just west of I-35 is pretty darned blue.)

John, I have the same suspicions about the Heisman voting politics. I even briefly considered posting about the irony of so many blue staters voting for a guy named Bush.

...the area just west of I-35 is pretty darned blue.

Well, that's a bit of an understatement, isn't it? Travis County was carried by Kerry/Edwards pretty decisively in 2004 (something like 57% of the vote).

But, ultimately, I decided I didn't care enough one way or the other to worry about it. ;-)
