Geico Gecko Redux

The fact that many of us are not impressed by the Cockney accent now sported by Geico's spokeslizard may come as a shock to the team that granted him that gift of speech. They seem to be quite proud of their handiwork.

Regardless of how you react to the news ads, you can't accuse the creators of slacking off during their creation:

"We gave him a full overhaul," says Hulin. "We were so into it, we bought our own pet gecko for texture and animation reference purposes. Using a mixture of Alias Maya, Apple Shake and mental ray rendering, we gave him a better skin shader, which gives his skin texture a more realistic quality. The agency wanted him to have very human gestures; he's just a regular bloke, after all. We broke away from the very precise anatomical proportions and giving him slightly longer arms and legs that we could articulate to make him more expressive. The lip sync was also quite challenging; he does a lot of talking in 30 seconds, and his cockney accent causes him to combine several words in one go. It's a very subtle style of animation for a spot like this. It’s been great fun to do."

I agree that the animation is impressive. But I can't help wondering if this is yet another case of "just because you can do something doesn't mean you should."

I love the little lizard commericals with the cockney accent. Doesn't it remind you of a green Michael Caine?

I've wondered about that accent. Is the Geico lizard supposed to be selling insurance to the British?

Maybe that's why he needs a squawky wanna-be Beatle accent.

I like the Geico lizard with the accent but was surprised to learn that it is Cockney.

I think the english accent lizard is a fabulous combination of technological brillance and entertainment. After all commercials are supposed to entertain right? These do it hands down. Great job guys.
