"Serenity" Redux

I liked "Serenity" plenty when last I saw it at the theater. But I've just watched it again on DVD and I've revised my opinion. This may be one of the least flawed sci-fi movies ever made. I rate it up there with Blade Runner, Star Wars and Jurassic Park.

There's almost nothing that doesn't ring true in Serenity, be it plot, f/x or dialog. Especially dialog. The odd cadence and juxtaposition of old west phrasing and the occasional Cantonese outburst just works, and I didn't realize how well until I watched the movie again.

Serenity is the movie that George Lucas somehow forgot how to make for a dozen years. Fortunately, we had Joss Whedon to stand in the gap.

Summer Glau still rocks. And I just realized that David Krumholtz (Mr. Universe) is the brainy cat in Numb3rs.

Blade Runner?!?!?! Really? I hope so. Rutger Hauer's monologue before he dies is one of my favorite movie scenes of all time...

In any case, thanks for the reminder. I have been meaning to add this to Netflix.

I wish Lucas would let Joss Whedon do episodes 7-9 of Star Wars. But that'll never happen.

Mark, I think you'll enjoy "Serenity." It's probably closer to "Star Wars" than "Blade Runner" in terms of atmosphere, but it's got some fascinating character studies, same as the latter film.

Denise, that was my thought, too. A collaboration of those two could have awesome results.

Oh...or were you suggesting that Lucas just bow out completely and let Whedon take over? Hmmm...interesting idea...

Posted by: Eric at January 21, 2006 10:59 AM

Yeah, I meant Lucas should bow out completely, maybe take the executive producer's job, and give Whedon free rein with the writing and directing.

And those of you who haven't seen the Firefly series, by all means, rent it or buy it. It's Da Bomb!

Mark! I agree - Rutger Hauer's speech at the end of Blade Runner is on my list of all-time favorite movie moments! I'm using exclamation points for what reason, I don't know.

And Serenity is flawless. It really is. It's, as you say, as good as Jurassic Park (and you know how many times I've seen that). I didn't like who died in the film, of course, because after watching the series I grew rather attached to the characters. But it all rang true.

Jurassic Park as "least flawed"? Ummm... I don't think too many real game wardens with big game hunting experience would willingly choose a 12 ga. shotgun for dealing with a several hundred pound Velociraptor.

According to real safari outfitters an artillery cartridge like the .375 Holland & Holland is considered the minimum for big game hunting.

Then again, the late Bob Peck who played Warden Muldoon had a British accent a safari vest, and a cool bush hat so he must be an expert.

I got the impression that Spielberg based the scene around showing how smart the 'raptors were and above all, that "guns don't work".

Spielberg also conveniently chose not to show Oscar Schindler handing his liberated Jews workers the semi-auto rifles he'd stockpiled so they could have a chance against the Nazis. Not surprising, considering Spielberg is one of those people who personally likes guns very much, he just doesn't want you to have them.

Well, Bladerunner, Star Wars, and Serenity are incredible, so 3 out of 4 isn't too bad. ;-)

Gee, that must be the reason I wrote "least flawed" instead of "flawless."

Regarding Jurassic Park and the concept of bringing full-scale dinosaurs back to life from amber-embedded insects and then turning it all into a theme park with a scoundrel employee attempting to sneak the goods off to a company doing the same thing with only the old guy and the bad guy being overweight and the first guy to die being black and the only black character of course dying...I'm not to concerned about the "reality" of the weapons used to "hunt" dinosaurs.

(Don't insult Jurassic Park! I've invested too much in it! Like thirty theater hours!)

Heck, that was just the opening salvo, Julie. There's so much more. But don't worry. I won't de-value your investment. ;-)

Serenity blew me away. I was expecting a reasonably good sci-fi flick, but got a tremendous ride! The characters were funny. The premise was interesting. The plot flowed. The movie was kind to Christianity. The hero was fascinating.

This might be a purchase. (1 per year.)

Yeah, it's a keeper...worth repeat viewings.

Thanks Mr. Freen. It's a touchy subject.

Heh.
