Mac XP: A real world test

Last week I posted about a hack that allows the installation and use of Windows XP Pro on the new Macs with Intel chips.

An intrepid Macworld staffer set out to test this application and provides a blow-by-blow description of the 12-hour process to get XP up and running on his Intel-powered Mac mini.

Despite the pain of the installation and configuration process (which he says he now can complete in only one hour), he's contemplating leaving XP in place for those occasional times when he has to run Windows but doesn't want to fire up another computer.

I still contend that this is a sign of the impending Apocalypse.

But I thought the whole point of having a MAC was to avoid... Oh, what do I know?

Actually, I think you're all treating this topic with exactly the amount of respect it deserves.

[Although Brian might disagree, since he plans to duplicate this feat on his on poor Mac. But he is a truly-called Geek and can pull it off.]

I thought the whole point was to match the tune with the story. ;-) No disrespect intended, seriously.

I don't have an Intel Mac yet. I can say that I've bought my last PowerPC Mac, but I don't know when I'll be due for a replacement.

But you can bet the first thing I'll do with an Intel one is get it running Linux and Windows, in addition to whatever Mac OS is out then. "First," because I'm sure to break stuff when I do it...

Gwynne, you and Ern both responded with classic lines, even if the reasons remain suspect. ;-)

In fact, you may have just given me an idea for a future contest... 8)

Brian, I'm tempted to augment my aged G4 with an Intel Mac mini, if for no other reason than it's a relatively inexpensive way to get my feet wet. But I just can't afford to run apps like Photoshop via Rosetta, so the replacement of my primary machine is still in the shadowy future.

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy! 8-)
