Game? What game?

I think there's a basketball game going on right now, but we inadvertently channel-surfed onto The Godfather II on AMC and there goes the evening.

The Godfather movies are on a very short list of films that demand that you stop what you're doing, sit down, and watch. Every time.*

Even the AMC teaser for tomorrow night's showing is good: "More Al. No Fredo" Heh.

*Well, III isn't quite as compelling as the first two, but even it has its moments.

Comments

A Godfather-themed videogame was recently released and that might account for the sudden and "coincidental" re-showings of the films.

Vivendi Universal Games is going to release a Scarface game, too.

Watch for Tony Montana mysteriously re-appearing on AMC as well... ;-)

I've always considered "Scarface" to be a lesser cousin to "The Godfather," not as watchable or entertaining. (Actually, I think James Lileks spent quite a bit of time recently on this very subject.)

OTOH, the "say hello to my leetle freen..." quote (which I'm sure is unrelated to your pseudonym ;-) ranks right up there with "an offer you can't refuse" as one of the all-time best movie lines.

MBH and I recently tried to watch Scarface again, and Oy! That first scene in the shower with the chainsaw caused me to run from the room with my hands over my eyes. That scene also crossed my mind as we were cutting down trees last weekend, the chainsaw dangerously close to my midsection as I helped to make sure the tree would not fall in the general direction of the house. But I love that quote!

Godfather is definitely one of those all time greatest movies though.

Godfather is definitely one of those all time greatest movies though.

Well, according to IMDB.com voters, it's THE best movie of all time (and Part 2 is #3). AFI has it at #3, and Entertainment Weekly also ranks it #1.

Part II is my fave, but the Christening/Execution montage in I is filmmaking at its finest.

These new things are out where you can actually buy a movie and keep it. It's saved me countless hours of lost sleep re-watching stop-downs like GF, Blues Brothers, Caddyshack, Patton, etc. Can't remember what they're called but they're shiny and round.

Hey, I already told you that we have to stop and watch every time this comes on. Can you imagine what our lives would be like if it was ALWAYS on?

"Shiny and round." Hmpf.
