Random Thursday

But first...can The Bard and The King co-exist in the same space-time continuum? If this sounds like the plot of a bad SciFi Original Movie (pardon the redundancy), it's actually much worse. Stay tuned for tomorrow's Fire Ant Theatre.

Now, on with the show...

  • I've spent the last couple of treadmill workouts watching Into the Blue, a 2005 movie whose raison d’ętre was to provide steady supply of underwater scenes focused on Jessica Alba and her teensy swim suit.

  • Is this a great country we live in or what?

  • I don't think this got a lot of press, but I found it interesting that old and busted (ha!) Martha Stewart lost out to new and hotness Rachael Ray in the 2006 Daytime Emmy Award for "Outstanding Service Show." Martha was later seen breaking into her coveted "Country Holiday Shiv Collection" while muttering "who do I have to kill to win this stinkin' award?"

  • The illegal immigration issue is a sticky one, allright. It should be obvious that any solution will have to not only address border control and what to do with the current population of illegals, but also remove incentives for companies to hire them. I'll bet this would help with the latter issue. Any company that's found to have hired illegals will immediately be required to make them full-time permanent employees with full benefits, and will also become their sponsors and held accountable for seeing that they successfully complete citizenship classes and learn to speak fluent English.

  • Don't waste your time telling me why that won't work, or how unfair it is. If you do, I'll add to my proposal that any individual who hires an illegal day laborer will be required to adopt him or her and their family; sponsorship requirements will be as shown above.

  • One of the hopefully temporary disappointments in my life is that I've misplaced my hardbacked copy of Wandering Stars: An Anthology of Jewish Fantasy and Science Fiction. It was published in 1974 and I found a copy at a Half Price Books store in Dallas a couple of years later. I think it got packed away with a number of other classics when we were trying to get organized -- you know how that goes -- and I've been missing it lately. I'm glad to see that it's back in print, but I'd love to re-read it in the original edition.

  • A sequel, More Wandering Stars, hasn't garnered the same enthusiastic reviews.

  • I don't have nearly enough burnout photos, and I'll bet you don't either. This'll fix that.

  • Say, when you add a hyperlink to a whole sentence, do you generally include the ending punctuation mark?

  • How whipped am I? Our "Introduction to Swing Dance" class through the local community college didn't make...and I'm actually disappointed. OTOH, we're becoming killer waltzers!

  • "The Killer Waltzers" would make a great band name.

Jessica Alba and the too-cute-for-Tupperware® Rachel Ray in the same post? Why don't you just toss in Jennifer Connelly and leave me a pile of quiveri—oh, hello Dear. Yes, we were just discussing... um... immigration reform.

Regarding your plan, Eric, make it so.

I'm normally all for dark-haired, dark-eyed beauties (after all, I married one), but Connelly just doesn't, well, make me want to discuss immigration reform. (I just watched her in "Dark Water," which could be part of the problem.) Now, if you want to toss in Keira Knightley, then we can debate the illegal immigration problem until the cows come home.

Did you realize the irony that Jewish character on Babylon 5 was played by an actress named Claudia Christian?
And while this isn't quite what you were writing about what about Jewish superheroes?
