MI III and more...
MI III: Yeah, it really is that good...
A few other observations from an afternoon at the movie house:
- X-Men: The Last Stand apparently features a mutant who has inexplicably become Abraham Lincoln, albeit with a green caste.
- Whatever else you might think about Tom Cruise's acting ability, you must concede that he's one of the all-time great on-screen runners. He's a very earnest runner. I admire that in an actor.
- Judging solely by the trailer, what School of Rock did for Jack Black's career and King Kong took away, Nacho Libre is bound to restore. I mean, the very thought of Black playing the role of one of those over-the-top Mexican wrestlers (or, as we used to call them, "wrasslers," is enough to crack me up. (However, the comments on IMDB.com are less than charitable, so perhaps I'm premature in my judgment.)
- Can someone please explain Laurence Fishburne to me?
Technorati tags: Mission Impossible III | Nacho Libre
Fair question. We didn't like I or II enough to buy the DVDs; I can't recall that we even rented II after seeing it in the theater. This one's in a class by itself.
Posted by: Eric at May 5, 2006 05:00 PMGreat news! I'll put it on my 'to see' list.
Posted by: Rachel at May 5, 2006 05:05 PMI would post a comment on your review, but, evidently I have a movie to go see....
Hey...wait...
I was cracking up at the Nacho Libre trailer. Beau just shook his head. I guess that brand of silly humor isn't his thing and I'll have to get that from Netflix.
Posted by: jen at May 6, 2006 02:56 PMJen, not everyone can be a silly humor consumer, nor should they be. Someone has to take care of business while we're busy cracking up. ;-)
Posted by: Eric at May 6, 2006 04:56 PMFrankly, I haven't been particularly excited about MI III, given the recent antics of Tom Cruise The Lunatic. But your four ants and the enthusiastic praise of movie critic Gary Cogill have convinced me that I should reconsider.
Re: green tinted guy in X-men III. You don't mean The Beast (Kelsey Grammar), do you? The trailer looks good, but I'm still disappointed that Nightcrawler won't be back.
Posted by: Foo at May 7, 2006 10:47 AMI really enjoyed M:I III as well.

Yeah, I'm sure that must be Kelsey Grammer as the Beast. He should be blue. I can't wait to see that!
Posted by: Denise at May 7, 2006 11:08 PMHe should be blue.
Maybe he was blue. I'm not sure now. Didn't Nightcrawler have blue skin?
In any event, X3 looks like a fitting sequel...
Posted by: Eric at May 8, 2006 06:36 AMTechnically, Nightcrawler had fine blue fur all over his body, but I guess that would have taken either too many computer cycles or too much time in the makeup chair, so They took artistic license and did the angel tattoos instead. Which, given Kurt Wagner's history in the comic books, was a very fair tradeoff.
The Beast has got to be furry, though. Back when the comic series started, he wasn't. He used to have pretty much the same abilities, but something happened to trigger the additional blue-and-furry mutation. I just can't recall what it was, at the moment.
I'll be interested to see how well Kelsey Grammar does with The Beast. It seems like perfect casting.
Posted by: Foo at May 8, 2006 07:24 AMWhat happened to make the Beast blue and furry? Wasn't it that John Byrne started drawing him? :-)
Eric, after seeing MI I, I was appalled what they did to the TV show. MI isn't simply supposed to be action, it's supposed to be a caper. Is MI-III a caper movie?
(The brief 90's TV version maintained that caper feel; outsmarting the bad guys with super tech tricks.) Does the movie do that?
Posted by: David Gerstman at May 8, 2006 12:18 PMOh sure. Make the OCD guy go look it up.
From www.marveldirectory.com...
"A brilliant student, McCoy completed his doctoral studies under Xavier's tutelage, and finally left the X-Men and Xavier's school to take a position as a genetic researcher with the Brand Corporation. There he developed a serum that acted as a catalyst for activating latent mutations. On drinking the serum McCoy underwent radical physical changes. He grew fur over his entire body, his ears became larger and pointed, and his canine teeth became larger, resembling fangs. The serum also further increased his superhuman agility, endurance, speed, and strength."
Posted by: Foo at May 8, 2006 12:33 PMI'm obviously the only X-Men movie fan who hasn't a clue as to the origins, geneaologies, predilections and peccadillos of the characters. I feel so inadequate.
David, MI III is, um, caperish. It does draw upon some of the familiar gimmicks of the original series, and has some over-the-top plot twists. But, it also occasionally resorts to more brutish ploys to move the story along. Still, I thought it had moments of fun (which II, at least, was missing...as I recall) and some truly suspenseful scenes, along with the usual earsplitting explosions that are de rigeur for any action movie today.
You just have a like a movie that includes a helicopter chase through a windfarm.

How would you rate number 2? I can't say I was that impressed so I have been dubious to say the least about going to another one...
