666 So What?
Today's the day when thousands of tatoos become date-relevant, their bearers the human equivalent of a very limited use PDA. Other than that, the significance of today's date escapes me.
I like the way Dr. Jim Denison sums it up in his daily email commentary:
Or, as we like to say, the main thing is keeping the main thing the main thing. And today's date ain't it.
You can read more of Dr. Denison's observations about God, the Bible, and other matters of true significance over at GodIssues.org.
I wonder if there'll be a big deal next year in July with 07-07-07
You know, I was just thinking that same thing. I'll be very surprised if there isn't a lot of hoopla attached to that date by some people.
7-7-7 does make a good bl@ckjack hand, though. ;-)
Posted by: Eric at June 6, 2006 08:05 AMEric, we're having some fun with the story over at the station's website ... our Online Poll gives visitors a variety of answers to choose from ... so far, "Who Cares" is our leading response, followed by "Just a Curious Number" ...
Posted by: Jeff at June 6, 2006 08:36 AMSomehow I doubt the Sovereign, Everlasting Lord uses our calendar, much less feels bound by it.
Posted by: Kelly at June 6, 2006 09:41 AM07-07-07 is going to be a big, BIG deal, because that is my birthday! 07-07-77 was also a very big deal because that was the day I got my learner's permit to drive. ;-)
I've always said that my birthday is God's favorite number. ;-)
Posted by: Gwynne at June 6, 2006 10:28 AMAs another blogger friend of mine pointed out, what all happened on 06/06/1806, or 1906 or 1706, or... you get the pictue.
Posted by: Jim at June 6, 2006 11:38 AMJeff, I really don't know anyone who pays much attention to dates like this...other than as a calendrical curiosity.
Kelly, on the other hand, wouldn't it be funny if He did Something Really Big on just such a date, simply because we didn't expect Him to. ;-)
Gwynne, maybe you should buy a lottery ticket next year on your birthday.
Jim, that was sort of the theme of the email commentary I mentioned in this post:
Imagine life on June 6, 1906. I did a little research this morning, and learned that Theodore Roosevelt was president that year, and the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize as well. Life expectancy was 48.7 years (it's 77.6 now). Editorials in the newspapers were reporting on the women's suffrage movement and the likelihood of its success in coming years. (Women finally won the right to vote in 1920.) The earthquake which destroyed much of San Francisco on April 18 was still on everyone's mind. The Ford Model N was America's most popular car, retailing for $500.00.
This essay would have been produced on a manual typewriter (invented 32 years earlier), reproduced at a local print shop, and mailed (at a cost of two cents per letter). Given our current distribution list, the process would have cost around $1,000 per week. Progress is not all bad.
Pretty mundane stuff, even if interesting from a historical perspective. I guess every generation thinks it's special in the cosmic scheme of things.

What?! And destroy whatever good might come to pass on my special day?! I don't think so. ;-)
Posted by: Gwynne at June 6, 2006 06:19 PMBut...but...you could be the next EARL!
Posted by: Eric at June 6, 2006 06:21 PMThe only thing the date means is money for Hollywood and Metal Bands Like Black Sabath. Besides the date only has real vaule in the West. And the date is 6/6/2006, if you truely want to be literaly. For me I am just going to live every day for today, because that is all we can do. Because we will not now when the end will come only that it will. Besides It wont go up in a poof of smoke there will be a little bit of hail and brimstone, so to speak, so when it happens we will know.
Posted by: Randall at June 6, 2006 06:32 PMRandall, that's a wise way of looking at things.
Posted by: Eric at June 6, 2006 07:04 PMI'm just glad the day's over so I don't have to listen to any more people say "Oooooh, 6/6/06! Isn't this [insert adjective]?"

I've always been fascinated by the desperation some people have about trying to attach significance to dates like this, the millenium, 1984, etc. It seems to me that we need to remember that no one but God knows the time when He'll return - and as soon as someone says they do, we know they're wrong, because God has said they don't. It's not something He's going to reveal - He's just going to appear.
That aside, I wonder if there'll be a big deal next year in July with 07-07-07, since that's a number of completion.
