Tool Quiz: And the answer is...
Yesterday's "Name that Tool" question generated a few good guesses, ranging from Brian's "it turns something" to Denise's "Al Gore," but, sadly, none of the responses were exactly accurate.
The tool represents the acme (ha!) of specificity; it's a cup hook driver for an electric drill. You may not appreciate this one-trick pony's value until you try hand installing a series of hooks into hardwood...your aching fingers will cry out for just such a tool.
And lest you think I'm the only person in the world who knows or cares about this, you should know that there's at least one other person who wants one. (Although I can't imagine how one might wear out one of these tools. Is there such a thing as a professional cup hook installer?)
Beth, predrilling is not only "kosher," but highly recommended. Nevertheless, screwing in a bunch of cup hooks can be tedious at best and painful at worst even with the holes.
I'm not sure which "things" you're referring to. If it's the tool, just one; if it's cup hooks...a bunch.

Seriously, it looked like some sort of circuit gate on steroids.

Posted by: Janie at June 23, 2006 09:41 AMBret, I have about as many circuit gates as you have cup hook drivers.
Janie, you know you can't learn stuff like this in mud school!
Posted by: Eric at June 23, 2006 09:46 AMIt was cup hooks. What are they for? I'm assuming not actually for hooking cups? (Hmm..that sounds like something they'd arrest on Cops...)
I feel like I need some now though! Just to say I have them.

Well, yeah, they are, among other uses. We have a dozen or for hanging our favorite mugs under our kitchen cabinets. We also use cup hooks in various places outdoors for hanging Christmas lights and decorations. And my wife has a collection of Swarovski crystal snowflakes that hang permanently from our fireplace mantel. Those are just a few of the uses I can think of, and I haven't even moved into the garage or shop!
Posted by: Eric at June 23, 2006 09:57 AMHm. Most of those I just use nails for - cept the cups, those go in the cupboard. But I'll bet they look pretty sitting out. Hmmm...maybe I will have to get me some of those. :)
Posted by: beth at June 23, 2006 12:06 PMBeth, you can even get decorative hooks, like painted porcelain covered ones, that don't look as "industrial." We found it was a good way to free up cupboard space, which we never seem to have enough of.
Be sure and check the Gazette regularly for more home decorating tips...I'm sure Martha does! ;-)

Ok, I'll bite...can't you just predrill a hole and then screw them in and it's easier? Or is that not kosher? And, well...how many of these things do you actually have? Cause I can double check, but I'm fairly certain that there are 0 of these in my home currently...what are they good for? (Am I missing out??)
