:-)
Yeah, for those hard-core pizza lovers who measure their consumption by the mile.
Close, but no cigar.
Posted by: Eric at July 8, 2006 05:11 PMI don't see any mile marker on it, but it's a tape measure of some kind...without the tape...made in Germany. Must be for measuring Bratwursts. No, seriously? Maybe just your standard 36 foot measuring device for rooms and such?
Posted by: Gwynne at July 8, 2006 05:41 PMIt's a map-distance-measuring-thingy.
You roll the wheel along your route, and it tells you how far it is on the map. Then you use the map legend to convert to real-world distance.
Or if it's not, it *should* be.

Posted by: Jim at July 8, 2006 06:48 PMBrian's exactly right. Back in the days before MapQuest...back when you could actually hold a map in your hands...one of these little jewels was an excellent, if math-intensive, way to compute distances between two points.
I still prefer the treeware version of a map, by the way. There's just something about being able to see the whole landscape that's more satisfying.
Posted by: Eric at July 8, 2006 07:11 PMSpeaking of maps, what do you think of the new-fangled laminated with super-strength folds? I love those.
Posted by: Scott Chaffin at July 8, 2006 08:10 PMScott, that's an excellent example of where technology has actually improved upon an already superior product. I'm with you...those things are great.
