Peter Boyle Dies

I see that actor Peter Boyle has died in New York at age 71.

Boyle had a long career and even though he's best known for his role as Frank Barone in Everybody Loves Raymond, I prefer to remember some of his earlier and more provocative roles, such as the tuxedo-wearing monster in Young Frankenstein, the prescient insurance salesman in an episode of the The X-Files, or the loony with the messiah complex in The Dream Team.

According to IMDB.com, Boyle was set to appear in two new movies scheduled for release in 2007 and 2008.

I enjoyed his work. That's sad.

It occurs to me that Boyle was one of the few actors whose career was continually active enough to allow us to watch him age on-screen, role by role. During the last couple of years on Raymond, he looked old and, frankly, worn out. I understand he was battling health problems even then.

Wasn't he also Joe McCarthy in a TV movie "Tail Gunner Joe?"

Yeah, according to IMDB, that was a made-for-TV movie released in 1977. I don't remember seeing it, though.

Didn't he have a recurring role on NYPD Blue, also? It seems I remember some fine acting from him on that series. LOVED him in Young Frankenstein. He was absolutely brilliant on Raymond.

Peter Boyle was always a joy to watch, but my favorite was his performance of "Putting On The Ritz" in Young Frankenstein. It was (dare I say it?)
"SOOOOPAH DOOOOOOPAH!"
