Musical Miscellany

Repeated iPod Playing: Fool's Paradise by Monday Morning. Wonder of it All (Next Year) is getting a lot of airplay on Air 1, and deservedly so. It's got the catchiest hook since Deeper by Delirious (with even the song title borrowing a phrase from the latter anthem).

Best Cover of a Christmas Song: Little Drummer Boy by Guns n' Roses Audio Adrenaline, as found on the WOW Christmas compilation CD. One of the Amazon.com reviewers refers to it as a weird, punked-out version, but my response is, "and your point would be?" I can't think of a song more deserving of being "punked out," unless it's MLB's least favorite seasonal song, Go Tell It On The Mountain.

I was in a worship band that did a version of Go Tell It On the Mountain. While not punking it out, we did Beatle-ize it. Specifically, we did it a la "A Hard Day's Night" complete with groovy opening clangy guitar chord and guitar/piano solo. The reason? It was the guitar player's (that's me) least favorite Christmas song and he refused to do an untweaked version.

...it was the guitar player's (that's me) least favorite Christmas song...

Ah, my respect for you -- already Olympian in magnitude -- has just increased.

i think that might be everyone's least favorite christmas song. i HATE "go tell it on the mountain".

eric - we recorded a few christmas tunes this past week during some down time if you're interested. it includes a serious reworked version of 'oh holy night'.

Kyle, that's a really nice arrangement of "O Holy Night"...good work!

I was interested to see that your drummer plays the cello.

Sweet version!!! Thanks for the heads up! Now I'm heading over to Kyle's suggestion to listen to their songs!

Jim plays guitar!! Wow!!!

Eric, now we can seriously have a hootenanny when he comes back out! All the Midland bloggers can bring out their instruments and jam out...maybe even get a gig at Jerrie's??? ;)

Jim has, in a previous life, cut a CD. Kyle, as you can tell, is a professional musician (and also owns a recording studio). Unfortunately, my musical talent ends at my blogroll.

Ever thought about taking up Spoon playing? Or getting one of those little shaker eggs?

Posted by: Janie at December 18, 2006 08:45 PM

eric - thanks! it was fun trying to come up with something different than the standard versions you've heard all your life.

i have one of those shaker eggs and those things are darn difficult! i'll stick with stealing licks from albert king and albert collins.
