Super Bowl 2007: Commercial Wrapup

Here's my list of the best commercials from this year's Super Bowl, in no particular order:

  • Nationwide: K-Fed's commercial

  • Bud Light: axe-wielding hitchhiker

  • Taco Bell: Lions trying to pronounce carne asada

  • Blockbuster "click and drag the [live] mouse"

  • Coke: computer game, take off on Grand Theft Auto

  • GM: laid-off robot, contemplating suicide (dream sequence)

  • Bud Light: gorilla plot

  • Emerald Nuts : Robert Goulet appears and messes with your stuff

  • Careerbuilder.com - The Series

  • Coke: the animated world inside a Coke machine

Emmitt Smith's HEB commercial would have been included if it hadn't been limited to a regional audience.

If I had to pick one favorite, it would be Blockbuster's, with the Taco Bell ad coming in second. The most visually pleasing ad was Coke's "inside the machine" spot.

Overall, this was a somewhat disappointing offering. Nothing just blew me away; no 5-ant awards were earned.

I had planned to create a poll to let folks vote on their favorites, but I'm too lazy. Feel free to leave your choices or your reactions to my choices in the comments.

i rewatched the comb-over beard commercial and thought it was pretty funny on the second viewing. just the idea (and reveal shot) of the guy with his beard wrapped around his whole head was pretty funny.

i liked the careerbuilder.com ones the best overall i think.

I'm sticking with the Blockbuster mouse as my favorite....but we all howled at the "bearded combover" guy.....
We were all kinda disappointed with them overall. Maybe it was just the chili talking....

Gotta admit that the Snickers ad was pretty good...

I liked the Careerbuilder ones - especially the first one (that I saw) with the pens-as-arrows before I knew what it was about.

Most surprising to me was how many commercials were for CBS's own TV shows. Is it just too expensive for advertisers, now?

The Blockbuster mouse ad was the only one that left the whole family laughing and demanded a rewind on the TiVo. Overall, it seemed kind of a "blah" night.

my favorite was the bud commercial with the stray dog becoming a dalmation.

Brian, good catch...I noticed that, as well (although the inhouse promos seemed to get thicker later in the game, when the national advertisers historically bow out of the lineup). I don't have a definitive answer, but I think you're headed in the right direction. Sponsors have to wonder if they're getting the bang for the buck from Super Bowl ads, and especially for a game pitting two midwest teams. I'll be interested in seeing the viewership numbers from the east and west coasts.

Rob, I'm sorry, but I'm not sure I'll ever be able to eat another Snickers bar. ;-)

It appears that the popular consensus is that Blockbuster's mouse ad was the cream of the crop this year.

Bart, we apparently hit the "post" button almost simultaneously.

I agree that the Bud ad hit the mark with many dog lovers, although probably not to the same extent that Mastercard's "Badger series" (the lost dog making his way home across the country) did a few years ago.

I'd say it's a toss-up between Blockbuster's click and drag mouse and Taco Bell's "carne asada" lions. I can rewatch both of those multiple times and still laugh.

Apparently the results from the big AOL survey validate your judgment...as we expected. ;-)

Eric, I seriously wonder, with each passing year ... if this is a non-story, driven by the Apple debut years ago ...

Yeah, some are cute, some are funny, some show a bit of imagination ... but they all seem to be a notch below ... plenty of old cliches (Go Daddy Girl, Wasssup?) in new settings

Nothing that stretches us ...

You're old enough to remember that broadcast of Apple's 'Big Brother' ad ... did you see anything Sunday that trod new ground, or presented images that will linger - whether it's in parody or in homage - for 20+ years?

Jeff, I suspect that, as in politics, we get the commercials we deserve.
