Crawling Back to the Blogosphere

I had every intention of posting something yesterday. Unfortunately, my internet service provider -- SoddenLink* -- had other ideas. I was able to "borrow" enough bandwidth from an unknown neighbor's unprotected wireless network to check email and complete some critical client-related tasks (fortunately, he or she uses a more reliable ISP), but couldn't muster the enthusiasm to use it for blogging. More about that later.

In any event, we're back from a relaxing vacation, and I figured I'd ease back into the 'sphere with a quiz of sorts. So, where in the world am I and my ant bud, shown below?

Photo of me and ant sculpture in undisclosed location

OK, it doesn't take Sherlock Holmes to figure out in general where we are, so I'll have to ask for a pretty specific location, down to even an intersection or street name. Even then, this should be no hill for a stepper.

*However lame it may be, the misspelling is intentional. It's my only means of expressing dismay at how the company's service has sunk to the same level as its TV commercials.

Yay! You're back. :) The Internet just got a little more interesting again.

Looks like Santa Fe to me, but I haven't been there since I was ...14? So I'm unlikely to come up with an intersection. And hey, I could be wrong about the whole Santa Fe -- oooh! Or Taos. Actually, I'm changing my guess to Taos. Unless it WAS Santa Fe, in which case I'm sticking with that.

You know you missed this. :)

While Beth is busy guessing every city in the Southwest, I'll chime in with my own guess. You're on Canyon Road (don't know the intersection) in The City Different. Next time I get to Santa Fe, I'm taking you with me; you know all the cool places.

Welcome back. Hope your break was restorative and restful, and fun too.

Ah, you guys are good! We did visit Taos, Beth, so it's probably that residual aura that you're channeling, but Jim is right...it's Canyon Road (Camino Artsy, for those not familiar with Santa Fe). But I'll wait to hear if someone knows the precise intersection (and perhaps even the actual gallery) before declaring him the undisputed champeen.

And thanks for the "welcome back"! Missed you folks...

Ah! The familiar content free fix!! I feel better.

Pull out your old Cootie game and spray paint the little critters bronze and you can make and pose your own Fire Ant Farm for funny photos! (I want to see you fix this pic to have you standing on your own front porch!)

I didn't mention every city in the southwest. I distinctly knew it wasn't Albuquerque. (Though I'm still pleased that I can spell it.)

Definitely has a Taosian aura. :)

I do agree that there needs to be some Photoshopping to have you and the ant in various other locales.

And you can tell it's winter because Eric's wearing his sleveless fleece. Brrrrrrr! And long pants!

You know, I've been trying to find the actual store since I made that first guess, but Google Image search doesn't have this particular ant in it, at least not linked to its abode.

Good on Beth too. I can't spell Albe...Ablu... whatever.

A Cootie game?! Careful...you'll be dating yourself! (And, yes, I definitely remember it.)

Beth, this is where airport abbreviations come in handy. ABQ is much easier to type than, um, that other word.

Jim, there were other much-larger-than-life ants at this gallery. Watch for future posts.

I don't know if you can tell from this photo but the weird posture of the sculpture is designed to provide seating in a sort of weird, Gigeresque chair. Cool concept, but for the multiple thousands of dollars they were asking, I think I'll stick with a La-z-boy recliner.

You're back!! Welcome home. :-)

A lovely sculpture, but I wouldn't want to sit on it. That visual is much too disturbing.

Aha! It's Canyon Road at Paseo de Peralta, and the sculpture is by Andrew Bairnsfather. What did we do before we had the internet?! ;-)

Posted by: Gwynne at February 28, 2007 05:41 PM

Thanks, Gwynne...and good job on the guessing, er, googling! The gallery is Crossroads Contemporary and its website has this ant on its front page.

Posted by: Eric at February 28, 2007 05:48 PM

And now I see that Andrew was the photographer of a certain photo of the Ant (copyrighted) and not the sculptor. 8-}

Posted by: Gwynne at February 28, 2007 06:48 PM

Dang, Gwynne. How'd you pull that off?

And I was actually there in September, at that very corner! I missed the ant, though I wouldn't have sat on it either.

Really glad to have you back Eric! By the way, It won't let me comment on the post after this. I was going to say that I have a Bible that I feel the same way about.

Me, I'd probably sit in the chair - Just for the funny photo hehe!

Thanks, Rachel...and thanks for letting me know about the problem with the comments on the "Oldest Thing" post. I've fixed it.

I was afraid to sit on the sculpture, given how expensive it is. One of those "you break it, you buy it" things! ;-)

I was able to "borrow" enough bandwidth from an unknown neighbor's unprotected wireless network...

I'm glad to know it's not just me who does this, occasionally. I'm not sure why, but I find it mildly fascinating to fire up my wireless monitor and check who's broadcasting. In our old neighborhood, there was only one other WAP to be seen; in the new one--its streets populated with lots of techies--there usually are at any given moment ten or so. All but mine and one other broadcast their SSIDs. All but two are secured.

Thank heaven for "Lyles_House", my last resort on those rare occasions when Grande goes legs up and I need to get to the outside world.

Welcome, back! I was going to say Sedona, but that question's already been settled, so I guess it's not Sedona. Can't wait to see the photoshop of this pic! :)

Posted by: Denise at March 1, 2007 07:46 AM

Foo, I can detect six wireless networks from my home office, but only one is unsecured. Signal strength ebbs and flows, however, and I can't count on being able to connect (nor would I want to).

Thanks, Denise. Don't hold your breath on the Photoshopping, however. I'm hoping some kind soul will do it for me. [hint, hint]

Eric, WELCOME BACK! I didn't offer a guess on where you were, because I had advance knowledge ... the trip came up in an e-discussion we had, early this year ... did you visit the Apple store in Albuquerque?

Are we on for a movie, Friday?

Posted by: Jeff at March 1, 2007 11:34 AM

Jeff, I thought "300" opened on the 9th. Am I wrong about that?

Posted by: Eric at March 1, 2007 12:06 PM

Whoops! You're right ... the 9th !!!
