How do they know?
I suspect that many of you can confirm the following observation: if you want to ensure that your clients/boss/spouse/kids/etc. will demand more of your attention than usual, you can easily do so by opening that familiar piece of mail containing a jury duty summons.
On the bright side, if I'm selected to serve, I'll enjoy a significant bump in daily income.
Blogging will resume once my dire has been sufficiently voired.
Beth,
I used to say that but then I got summoned. Ugh.
Eric,
Another way to ensure a deluge of incoming demands is to say yes to subbing on a rural route when a regular carrier is on vacation. Works every dang time.
Posted by: Jim at March 26, 2007 09:54 AMYeah, it's not much fun, although it's more bearable if you have some spare time on your hands. And there is a certain amount of educational benefit from participating in the judicial process.
Oh, in case you're wondering why I'm able to reply so quickly, I have to report back on Wednesday morning as a part of a panel for possible service for a trial set to begin that afternoon.
Posted by: Eric at March 26, 2007 10:57 AMSignificant bump in your income? Ummmm...aren't they paying like, $12 or something? Or did I just show how I've not been picked lately??
One of my friends served last week and actually had a good time and got out of there fairly quickly.
Of course, if you let them know how many handguns you've been purchasing lately, you may be off before you're on...;)

Welcome to the wonderful world of freelance web design! ;-)
It's actually $10/day, unless you get picked, and then you get into the truly big bucks of $40/day.
you may be off before you're on...
I dunno; around here, that may be viewed as a positive.
Posted by: Eric at March 26, 2007 06:02 PMOnly the title showed up in the RSS feed, and I clicked through thinking it was the Boudreaux joke...
Posted by: Phelps at March 26, 2007 09:39 PMYeah, I like to sucker people in like that.
What's the Boudreaux joke?
On second thought, maybe I don't want to know.
Posted by: Eric at March 26, 2007 09:58 PMI don't mind so much the action of being a juror. No, its the massively disorganized process of choosing the jurors that chaps the snot outta me. Each time its as though this whole democracy thing is a brand-new process!
The courthouse clerks always seem to be running about 20 minutes late getting to work...
Then the judge is delayed...
Then the clerks have to play "Go Fish" with oversized index cards...
Aughh! Just pick me or don't pick me - but don't needlessly squander 2-3 hours of my morning getting your crap together!

So unfair. I want to have jury duty. And I've never been called.
Just remember the proper answer as dictated by the little old lady in the jury in My Cousin Vinny: "Fry 'em."
