Signs of Impending Armageddon - #1,238
If you think that God doesn't have a sense of humor, consider this. As of a moment ago (things may have changed by the time you read this) the #8 best-selling music CD at Amazon.com is Donny Osmond's "Love Songs of the 70s."
And for those who are still truly committed to the album concept, consider this. Does the world really need another version of Gilbert O'Sullivan's suicidally whiny Alone Again Naturally*?
*And, pray tell, how is this a love song, exactly?
Gee, what's next, Rod Stewart singing standards?
Posted by: Jimmy at April 25, 2007 04:06 PMHey now, just cause he's a little be rock and roll doesn't mean he's bad. (Or was it Marie who was a little bit rock and roll?) After all, had I but kept my doll I could be rich now.
That and he was really good with the whole technicolor dreamcoat thing.
Posted by: beth at April 25, 2007 06:09 PMNow see what you've gone and done? I've been singing that stupid Alone Again song for three hours!!!
Posted by: Jim at April 25, 2007 06:45 PMOh, so the Jefferson Starship lover takes it out on Donald Clark Osmond??? Who not only is a singing *star* but can handle the arduous task of emceeing the $19.95 Pyramid?
There's no accounting for taste.
(Your headline reminded me of the punchline of an old joke -- Christ has returned, and calls the Pope. One of the Pope's underlings answers the phone, gets wide-eyed, and rushes into the Pope's office. "Good news and bad news, your Eminence!"
"What's the gospel, my son?"
"Christ! He has returned and is on the phone!"
"Wonderful! Put Him on -- but, what possibly can be bad news now?"
"He's calling from Utah.")
Posted by: Bret at April 25, 2007 07:22 PMGwynne, from one perspective, it's no worse than Pat Boone covering all those heavy metal "tunes." From another perspective, it's just eww.
Jimmy, to my generation, Rod's songs are the standards.
Beth, it was Marie who was a little bit country. I know that only because I read the review of Donny's CD on Amazon.com, and we know those reviews are the same as scripture.
Jim, it could have been worse. I could have referenced something by Abba. ;-)
Bret, I actually meant to reference "Apocalypse" in the title instead of "Armageddon," because I can't spell the latter. Anyway, I wasn't slamming the Donster as much as those songs he's singing. But if he'll ever cover anything by Starship, I'm all over it.
Posted by: Eric at April 25, 2007 09:07 PMMaybe we'll see Michael Jackson covering some Led Zeppelin. Wouldn't that be a hoot.
Posted by: bob at April 25, 2007 09:30 PMBob, he'd probably be passable for "Stairway to Heaven," but I shudder to think about him doing "Black Dog." ;-)
Posted by: Eric at April 25, 2007 09:35 PMI can see him doing something with deep meaning, like "We Built this City on Rock & Roll."
But if he tries to do "Comfortably Numb" or "Have a Cigar" I'll have to hunt him down.
Posted by: Kelly at April 25, 2007 09:46 PMHe was great in Weird Al's "White & Nerdy" video

Hey, if someone has to be singing those songs, it might as well be The Donald Osmond. They were made for each other. ;-)
