Font-Obsessed Like Me

Don't know what you're doing on your Labor Day holiday, but I'm watching the Dead Like Me* marathon on the Sci Fi Channel and feeling pretty self-satisfied because I just tracked down the cool font used for the title and credits on the show.

Googling the term "font used on 'Dead Like Me'" turned up nothing useful, so I thought I'd take a shot at it with MyFonts.com's WhatTheFont typeface search feature. I extracted the title from the header graphic on the DLM home page, converted it to black-and-white for maximum legibility and uploaded the resulting JPG to the WhatTheFont website. After giving WTF (stop laughing) a couple of hints as to the identity of some of the more stylized glyphs, it quickly returned a font that is undoubtedly the right one: Chiller, by Linotype.

Here's another example of the font:

Now, what I need is a client whose site would be an appropriate vehicle for Chiller.

Well, on second thought...

*Dead Like Me, in case you've never watched it, is a black comedy series about the "lives" of Grim Reapers, who are actually dead people who harvest the souls of live people just as they are about to become, um, dead people.

Fonts! I used to be really into fonts. I still have 1000s of them somewhere on my computer. "Chiller" would be great for your church's website around Halloween. :) Ha! just kidding.

In case you haven't heard, someone has made a movie about the Helvetica font:

And here's a little film on the Cooper Black font. I think it's been around awhile.

I like that font. I guess that probably reveals much about me.

Hmmmmm.

Denise, I was aware of the Helvetica flick (I'm waiting for the DVD), but hadn't heard about the Cooper Black movie.

I can't believe how seriously some people take their fonts! ;-)

Janie, it just reveals what a person of style and grace you are.

eeeeuuuwwwww!!!!!!!!!!
In response to the idea of what "Dead Like Me" is all about..........the "chiller" font has been around for awhile - I have something like it in Publisher or Word or one of those program things. My personal preference is for the "artsy-fartsy" fonts - you know, the pretty girly looking ones! HA!

I already have chiller! It's a great little font...

Cherie, DLM is not as "eww-ish" as you might think. The main storyline is about a 20-something grim reaper (who, by the way, are ordinary people who died and were somehow "drafted" into the role) who is rebelling against her job duties while at the same time trying to re-establish contact with her dysfunctional family which is being torn apart by her recent death. The comedic part of the series comes in the fact that the grim reapers still inhabit human bodies (no longer their own) and must make their way in life (holding down regular jobs, etc.) while still fulfilling their supernatural assignments.

Uh, you just have to watch it. ;-)

Rachel, I'm sure I've seen the font around before, but I never knew what it was called.

DLM is the bomb... there is word that there may be a movie in the works, or a renewed deal with SciFi to get it back in production.

Crazy little show. Bryan Fuller was the creator, who has some serious Sci-Fi chops.

Jon, I read somewhere that they were making a straight-to-DVD feature length film which had all the original cast except Mandy Patinkin (which, of course, is a significant drawback). I don't know that it has the legs of something like "Firefly" and "Serenity," but it's got that same essence of quirkiness that makes it a candidate for cult status.

See...I heard that Patinkin couldn't be in b/c of his Criminal Minds schedule. Now that he's off Criminal Minds I was hoping he'd be in the movie.

Sadly, none of the Reapers ever said, "You killed my father, prepare to die!" That would've been amusing.

It's still a great show.

Beth, I have no way to judge the credibility of what I read - it was on some fan site or MySpace page - so you could well be right about Patinkin's current availability.

And it IS hard to watch him in any role without thinking of The Princess Bride!

DLM was indeed awesome! I was sorely bummed when it cancelled.

I'm a bit of a font fan too.

Interesting site, Rob. The font quality seems to range from amateurish to quite good, but a bunch of them are downright fun.
