New iPods
Need to dispose of some spare cash? Apple will gladly take it and give you one of the updated iPods just announced this afternoon. Choose from:
- the iPod touch, which seems to be an iPhone without the phone; features the same cool/awful touchscreen navigation introduced on the 'phone. Oh, and did I mention wifi (802.11b & g) capability, with Safari pre-installed?
- the iPod classic, which connotes "old and busted" but with up to 160gb of space also lets you carry 40,000 songs* in your otherwise empty pocket.
- the nano now has video capability
- Even the shuffle gets a prettying-up, sporting different colors, including a red version that sends part of your money to fight AIDS in Africa. Bono thanks you, by the way.
I just checked and none of this is on Apple's website yet, by the way. Probably will be by the end of the day, though.
Our family (of two, or three if you count the dog) already has seven iPods. And all of our spare cash is already spoken for. But I'd still love to take the touch for a test-drive.
*Or one copy of MacArthur Park. Or, approximately 200 albums in uncompressed, CD-quality format, should you be so discriminating in your listening preferences.
I've been thinking about buying my first, but all the choices confound me. (Not a high hurdle, that...)

Most people who've held out from getting an iPod and then finally do seem to wonder why they ever waited so long to get one. However, if I'd had an XM Radio subscription five years ago, I don't know that I'd have been so quick to buy a 'pod. That's what we listen to most of the time on road trips.
Posted by: Eric at September 5, 2007 03:45 PMI've purchased exactly two iPods in my life, less than a year apart. The first one was from finally succumbing to the temptation, and the thought that I'd actually go out and exercise with it. Which I never really did. The second one was to replace the first one that I left sitting on an airplane seat.
I called and filed a claim with the airline, but if the thing hadn't already been turned in by the time I called, I knew someone had scored themselves a free iPod.
But you are definitely right...I don't know how I went so long without one. And the next time I buy a new one, hopefully, will be three or four more iPod generations down the road.
Posted by: Tricia at September 5, 2007 04:31 PMOkay, so I hear the sound of redemption....XM Radio.
I'm guilty...for like 5 years worth. Maybe more. So much so, that even though they have XM Roadies, etc., I still lean to a GM Vehicle when I cast my eye towards the future purchase.
Which sucks. Because I think I need something like a Land Cruiser or a Sequoia - anything w/ better gas mileage and the room to travel.
And XM Radio, they don't have.

Posted by: Janie at September 5, 2007 06:00 PMoops. It tried to block my entry when I put the words Land and Cruiser together.
Got me hanging.
Posted by: Janie at September 5, 2007 06:01 PMWeird. Anyway, I have a Roadie and I love it. I have an adapter so I can use it in the house with my stereo, although I tend to just leave it in the car.
Posted by: Eric at September 5, 2007 06:02 PMTricia, when "want" collides with "need," the resulting wreckage is often played out in my checking account balance. ;-)
Posted by: Eric at September 5, 2007 06:04 PMThe way I think about it is, I 'wanted' the first one. Upon losing it, I 'needed' the second one, with more gigs as well. So for the second one, anyway, I'm off the hook...right?
Posted by: Tricia at September 5, 2007 06:27 PMIm guilty of iPod love .... 3 - Shuffles (gifts) 1- Nano (wife's car), a 3rd Gen (gave to a kid) and finally a 5th gen 60gig (for my sanity). Will I upgrade to a new one? I think Ill wait till the "Touch" gets a few more gigs cause I got way to much music for 16 gigs. I wonder if the New Nano is included on the "Buy a Mac, get a Nano free" promo? Guess I'll see this weekend when I make the pilgrimage to one of the Austin Apple stores.
I have Sirius and I haven't heard anything about the merger with XM for quite a while, wonder if the deal died? The good part about that might be double the channels to listen to if the technology is there.
"MacArthur Park," ripped at VBR 0, runs a mere 15,413,248 bytes. You could fit it into 160 GB twice if you were so inclined.
Posted by: CGHill at September 5, 2007 07:54 PMTricia, as far as I'm concerned, you're "off the hook" on the first one as well. I've got a better definition of "need" than you do. ;-)
Bleu, I didn't check the availability, but if the new nano is available immediately, I don't know why it wouldn't qualify. The promotion goes through the middle of September, doesn't it?
And the Sirius/XM merger is still in the works, and could close by the end of the year. It's still being reviewed by the FTC. Interestingly, the proposed merger may have gotten a boost from the recent district court ruling that put the Whole Foods/Wild Oats Market merger back on track. If that ruling provides a relevant precedent, it could well mean that the satellite radio merger won't be deemed to pose a significant risk of monopoly in the radio broadcasting industry. I think your question about the technology is the more pressing issue.
Charles, I'm trying not to be disturbed by the fact that you even know that. But, if I was going to put it on my 'pod once, I'd probably go ahead and put it on twice, because I'd have nothing to lose.
Posted by: Eric at September 5, 2007 08:58 PMTook a look at the promo page .... looks like they added this today "iPod models introduced on Sept. 5, 2007, are not eligible." those meanies!
Posted by: Bleu at September 5, 2007 09:17 PMWell, that kinda sucks. I didn't notice whether the new nanos carry a higher price tag than the old ones, but if they don't, Apple's just being cheap with the promotion!
Posted by: Eric at September 5, 2007 09:22 PMDede is so close to succombing to the siren call of the new iPod Touch. She's been holding out and I do owe her a nice b-day gift... And I'd inherit her iPod Nano V2 which is incredibly light and has awesome battery life compared to my old iPod Mini.
Posted by: Rob O. at September 6, 2007 03:06 AMAnd I'd inherit her iPod Nano
A win-win if ever there was one.

Ummm.....7 ipods? To hold all your song repetoires, or is it because y'all keep upgrading?
Sweet.
