What the iPod touch is missing
Here's a great rundown on the features that you'll find on the iPhone that are not carried over to the iPod touch (which many have erroneously described as an iPhone without the phone).
I was particularly intrigued by the perceived difference in picture quality (with the iPhone's screen being described as noticeably better than the iPod's). Given that one of the big selling points of the iPod is video/photo capability, I figured Apple would focus on feature parity in this regard.

I use the DLO TuneStik, it does use the typical FM connection but offers a unique remote that mounts to your steering wheel.

The sound quality is great, but that really depends on the radio and how sensitive the reception.
Posted by: Bleu at September 17, 2007 09:55 AMBeth, I'm no help, as I fall solidly in your camp on this one: OK is good enough. I use an FM transmitter, and I'm fine with the sound (especially considering I've got two blown speakers in my 9 year old Durango, and have to pull the bass slider down all the way when I listen to music. Tim would commit hara-kiri rather than endure that.)
I understand that a cassette adapter is second best, and a direct connection to an audio-in port on your car's stereo is the best. But, other than that, I have no words of advice. Well, I do have two words: gift card.
Posted by: Eric at September 17, 2007 09:58 AMmany cars, especially newer ones, have rca jacks on the back of the deck. or, if you have installed a different deck, it should have an AUX input. buy an RCA to 1/8" cable, and run it out from the dash. that will be the best sound. tape adapters sound good too.
FM transmitters will NEVER sound right. as the name implies, they are Frequency Modulators, which change the frequencies music needs to sound "correct". There are certainly ones that might sound better than others, but FM transmitters inherently are lower quality.

Um.
Well.
You see.
...You didn't translate it into a specific, googleable item (RCA to 1/8" cable). I don't do so well with abstract concepts when it comes to wires.
I'll be over there in the corner, if you need me.
Posted by: beth at September 18, 2007 09:15 AMA little groveling is all I ask. ;-)

Kind of off topic - but it relates to iPods, so hopefully that's ok. I figured I'd seek the expertise of an Apple-addict -- can you recommend a good car adapter for the iPod? Something that doesn't degrade the sound quality? (Obviously it's not for me, since I'd be hardpressed to notice and am quite happy with my FM adapter.) I'm considering getting an iPod for Tim for his commuting for his b-day, but he whines about how bad things sound through the FM adapters...any recommendations?
