Too Much Stuff
You can tell when you have too much stuff by packing 60 moving boxes, carrying them to a storage unit, and returning home to find that the only perceptible difference is that your closet doors can now be shut.
Sixty down; hundreds (?!) to go...
I recommend the book "It's All Too Much" by Peter Walsh. He's got some really good helps on how to get rid of your stuff (and not just how to buy more containers to put your stuff in).
I love it. We keep rereading it and get something new out of it every time.
What's funny is now when I am trying to keep or discard something I ask myself, "Do I want to move this?" ( and we don't have any plans to move in the near future) but the answer is usually NO!
Moving encourages me to think I'd like to go minimalistic, but in practice it never works lol!

What about pay stubs from 1973? Do those count? Also, did you know that Mastercard used to be called Mastercharge?

Sounds like a useful resource. Of course, one of the things we have too many of is books. ;-)
Rach, I keep telling myself that every time I buy something new, I have to get rid of something old, but myself never listens.
Posted by: Eric at January 12, 2008 07:10 PMBoy do I understand "stuff." I've moved 8 times in the past 10 years.

Oof. I can't imagine. I suppose the upside is that you've got it down to a science. ;-)
Posted by: Eric at January 12, 2008 10:08 PMAh well. Life is a parade. You can watch it go by or you can get in step with the band. I've learned this though: never pack the coffee pot, shower curtain, and bed sheets. Put them on the front seat of your car.

Genius.

Posted by: Eric at January 14, 2008 05:45 PMLast November I decided to finally clean out the garage and actually put a car in it. I went through box after box discovering why in the world did I save this junk. I did discover one box that I packed 14 yrs ago when I was newly married and moved from my bachelor pad to our old house then on to the new house, FINALLY unpacked and thrown away ....
Posted by: Bleu at January 14, 2008 07:16 PMI found having your house flood from a broken water softner can do wonders for sorting but mainly throwing out lots of junk accumulated after 30 years of marriage. The better half does not even get mad for you pitching out perfectly good junk.
Posted by: rockhead at January 14, 2008 09:28 PMBleu, what if you need some that jun--um, memorabilia, someday?!
Rockhead, I suppose that just torching the joint would be out of the question? ;-)

You know...moving is always horrendous. I don't think it really matters whether you have 60 or 6000 boxes.
Then again, if you have Atari cartridges that you're lugging around with you, maybe you can make a case for some selective weeding :)
